There are 2 specials at the moment, both for about 6k. One is the canon 1000d and the other the nikon D60. I'll reseach on the web as well but I actually trust your opinions more.

Mud, I've also been doing some research into a new DSLR, have you had a look at the Sony A200? It's half the price of all the other cameras, you seem to get a full range of lenses and flashguns, also at a much lesser price than the big names. Do some research on it, I am thinking about getting one, just need to look into it a bit more.

I have a Canon 1000D done about 169 fotos with it, its brand brand new..

I comes with two lenses 18-55 and 55-250 both stabilized the kit is complete as how you would buy it in the shop, cables, strap, battery.charger, software and 2 GB Sd memorry card.Bought on 26 april 2009 in southafrica still under warranty till 2010.

The cheapest you can get this complete bundle locally at the moment is R 10.000..

    R 7500 excl delivery

I also used to love Canon - until I got my Nikon D40. So far, I have had (Manual analog SLR: Canon M, Pentax 55z Analog SLR, and my Nikon D40 DSLR). Up to date, my Nikon D40 is my best experience.... I cut my teeth on my Canon M SLR.

I have a Canon 350D ... I think the answer to the question between Canon and Nikon from a DSLR perspective is if you already have any extra lenses, then obvious that you will choose that brand ..... just remember that the lenses (from a Canon perspective) are quite pricey +- R7,000 per lense with IS .... both very good cameras

I curently have a Sony Alpha 200 DSLR - the camera is gr8 - however sourcing accessories and generic parts are very bad - that would be the major reason for recommending the Nikon or Cannon - In my opinion the Nikon is better but once again the most popular is the Cannon so you have more access to info and equipment.

I have the Canon 350D, and a great camera, but the Sony's are awesome and such great value.

Here is some pricing for comparison purposes, I am sure you could get better prices from the actual photo retailers.

    Prices excl. vat

Nikon's are like the Mac's of the camera world. Easy to use, good quality but a little bit more pricy. (also slightly overpriced in SA compared to other brands etc). Canon would then be a bit more like pc's where when you look at the numbers you seem to be getting a bit better value for your money.

Hey Broder, I just got the Nikon D60 today for 5 klips hey. Just need to get a memory card and bag and I'm set. Can't wait, my brothers fiance has the D40 and she enjoys it and it takes good photo's. I'd go for the Nikon hey.

Rory - from what I've seen the Canon's are more pricey than the Nikons, but I suppose it's where you look as well.

haven't seen it jet, my D60 take good pitchers and if i can get a 300mm micro lens for it i think it will rate as the best affordable camera.
