    Hi all
i am in the process of converting a bath water tank , to a marine tank.
i wanted to know if anyone can suggest what i can use my existing 2 x FX5 cannister filters for/ what media to run through them , and if this is a good idea.
i have read that cannister filters can cause Nitrate or nitrite increases due to detritis build up. (pardon if i am wrong)

i havve 2 of these bad boys on my tank at the moment , and while creating great flow , i must choose to either use them or sell them off

the tank will be a FOWLR tank

Canister would be fine for a fowlr tank.

They fine to run chemical filtration in. Maybe carbon and/or phosphate remover. Ive seen some people put live rock in them too.

This all depends on media you have in there and how often they get cleaned. Alot of people frown upon using them in marine tanks, but nothing wrong with using them as an add-on to your existing filtration.

will, be running sump , with DNW 250 skimmer , and DSB , they have really been a huge help on the fresh water tank ,and didnt want to waste them , as they are quiet and really enjoyed using them.

having used those before, i would add seachem matrix stones, some ceramic rings , i use them, and heavy mechanical filtration to keep the rings clean, thats the secret.

you can also run bio-pellets as the flow through the chambe is high and will keep them moving.

many options, will post again later when i have some time

Easiest use for them would be to increase flow rate in the tank (run empty if you can).
    You basically have 3500 l/h x 2

    why the conversion?
my recommendation sell the setup to someone doing bathwater if you can get a price
Sometimes big headache & maybe your neighbour on masa is flogging his marine.;)

    @BigFish
thanks , the tank , is setup in my master bedroom , in a custom cabinet built in, and bathwater tank , has taken a back seat , as i need the challenge, and it isnt there any more.

conversion will be slow , but would like to keep some fish that i cannot keep in my reef take , like triggers and emperor angels and a few others. cannisters are there so i either utilize them, or sell them off, but they are amazing filters and whisper quite , so i thought if i can benefit from them, then why not

I run my complete system on 2 dophin cannisters that are +-8 years old.
Was a Malawi tank before, added better lights, skimmer and some pumps and a Reef was born.
Running without hitch for 18 months, matured as any other, cleaner an more stable than
some setups with the whole nine yards (Sump, Reactors, etc..)..

i knew i remember seeing a tank run only on cannisters only , good job on you.
i am basically going the same route as you.
i have an external skimmer, and now i just need to do the conversion.
i will have a look at your thread

The two cannisters are below the tank. Along with my mums crokery :p
The tank is in the Longe/Dining room area. Should be able to see in the pics.

On the Left of the tang there is a Dophin 1600 and 1300 on the right.
There is no real plumbing as each cannister only needs a feed and return.
This is done by those clear hoses you get with the unit, hangs from the tank to the back.
The 1300 is also used to feed my Hailea 300A chiller, or is it 500A? something like that.

Whats in the Cannisters? Carbon, Filterpad, Sponge,Ceramic noodles and some aragonite and LR.
Each cannister was cleaned to date 3 times each. At no specific interval, was whe i was free.
Recently cleaned both together to get rid of something i dosed the tank that caused my SPS to bleach and die.
I run a ATU from a white 20l drum on the left side of tank as well.
