As the title stayts, can this happen.
    The reason is this.
9 Months ago I bought 2 Banggai from a lfs and they claimed that they were a pair.
I get home all excited. Aclimetisi them. Put them into the tank with lights off.
Next day check on them and the big guy is chasing the small guy all over.
I left them and still after a few days still the big guy is chasing the small guy.
I try catching one of them out when lights out but no chance.
Anyway its been 9 months of bickering between them.
I get home from surfing today, check on the tank and bam. They swimming side by side. The small guy goes under the big guy and nudges and vibrates. Looks like they have hooked up. Still now.

    Definitely cant change sex!
Ive kept banggais for 3years now. I have seen similar reactions, but it is normally only for a day or 2 then back to bullying!
Can you perhaps post a nice closeup pic of each?

    Thanks @Gesiggie.
Yip, that article is pretty close to 100% for id'ing banggais!
The easiest is when both are fully matured to look at their square bottom lips & long dorsal fin extension...
It is still not an easy task.
I have a very large male banngai cardinal in my tank that is perfect for sexing cardinals...
If i put a male in with him, he will try to kill it immediately. If i add a female, he is extremely lovey dovey from the word go. Havent had a single sexing wrong with him!

I have read on various sites that this cannot be used as fail-safe method, as age / size can play a role in length, leading to mistaken identity.

    @Visser.
    Just a update.
They have split up to opposite sides of the tank but not as agresive as before.
Going to diy a Mirror Trap to catch one out.
    Thanks for your help.

Hi bud, glad to see theyre not as agressive anymore. Mine also did that at times (ignored each other) but then got back to bullying the smaller one again!
You can perhaps try the trap i built, works well for agressive fish.
