I want to know. For coral and reefs...u need calcium in the water...i spose for inverts aswell? Does adding shells to the set up give off the required calcium needed?

Unfortunately not... To release bound calcium like from shells you need a low pH...
Reefs need to be run at high pH..

Also - shells consists of a combination of calcium, phosphates, nitrate, etc..... trying to use shells would most likely leach unwanted chemical compounds into the water as well.
Rather think of using either decent commercial calcium products, and later on switching to something like calcium hydroxide. (The reason for this, is that you can learn how to dose, without over-dosing - the problem with calcium hydroxide, is that one can easily overdose or under-dose. Over-dosing could have disastrous effects, ie in raising the pH of the tank to unacceptably high values.)
