    Hi all,
I have recently come across a bag of calcium hydroxide and would like the chemical guru's to give me some advise please.
Firstly on the front of the bag it is called limbux lime and is supplied by:
    TARMAC BUXTON LIME @ CEMENT
    TUNSTEAD HOUSE BUXTON
    DERBYSHIRE SK17 8TG
On the back of the bag it has the following info:
    PRODUCT IS CLASSFIED AS A:
    BS EN 459 - 1 -CL 90-S
BUILDING LIME AND BS EN 12518
CLASS 1 TYPE A LIME FOR TREATMENT OF DRINKING WATER
    TYPICAL ASSAY: 95 - 97% calcium hydroxide

Any info on what this means or if it would be safe for use in a aquarium would be great.
    Cheers

Shane - the fact that it is used in drinking water, and the fact that it states 95 to 97% calcium hydroxide, would tell me that it should be safe to use.
The only thing that I DO worry about, is - what the heck does the other 3 to 5% consist of?

I need to get hold of the supplier and find out if they can send me a material data sheet of this chemical. I just thought that maybe someone will know what the codes stand for.
    Cheers

Normally in lower grades of Calcium Hydroxide the main contaminant would be Magnesium Hydroxide making up the 5% so probably ok.

Not at all, provided of course that is what the 3-5% is. Its solubility in water is as low if not lower than Calcium hydroxide so difficuilt to tell with commercial aquarium test kits.
Perhaps one of the guru`s can recommend here ;)

OK - no real guru - Midas - you are MOST likely a far better guru at this.
BUT, I agree - IF the other 5% is magnesium hydroxide - it will form the seperate compounds, magnesium (possibly magnesium carbonate - if the atoms bind with CO2 molecules), H2O and possibly release one atom Oxygen. (I used to be an ace at science and chemicals - too many moons ago to care).....
I would STILL love to know what the 3% to 5% really consists of.

I'm in much the same position, I have access to literally tons of food grade lime used in the water purification industry and was considering using it too - looking at how much money and time we put into livestock of our tanks I couldn't really justify saving a few rand on using it over a trusted brand, just in case some impurity messes everything up. . .

    I agree,
This is why I thought to ask about the use in my tank.I am no chemist and needed to know what the effects would be in the tank if usd.
    Cheers
