Howdy, so i am busy gathering some info on how we reef, who does what etc
the first params i would like to get info about is related to corals.

I would like to get the following from those who want to participate

Tank Volume (tank + sump + fuge):
    Avg daily consumption of:
    Ca
    Alk
Do you use a calcium reactor:
What you dose: (brand and product)
    dosage frequency: (daily, weekly)
water test intervals: (fortnightly, weekly, monthly)
stocking density: (provide qty of each)
    Total Corals
    SPS
    LPS
    Soft corals, polyps, shrooms
    Clams
    Other

do you do water changes: (percent/volume & frequency)

    do you test for:
    Iodide
    Strontium
    pH
    Potassium

Would you like to change anything in your reef regime? test more if testkits are more accessible, monitor and tweak more parameters? maybe perform more substantial waterchanges? what would you like to do given a large budget?

it would be great if you take part and answer as accurately as possible, i will have a random frag pack prize for 1 or 2 participants

    thanks

Tank age: 6 months & 2 weeks (I added this as I think it might be useful too for comparison)
Tank Volume (tank + sump + fuge): 194 liter total volume
    Avg daily consumption of:
    Ca: 3ppm p/day - target 450ppm
    Alk: 0.518dKH p/day - target 10dKH
Mg: 5.7ppm p/day - target 1600ppm (I added this as it was in the thread title)
Do you use a calcium reactor: No, doser for Ca & Alk
What you dose: (brand and product):
Ca: Red Sea Reef Foundation A (stock solution) - auto, every second hour
Alk: Red Sea Reef Foundation B (stock solution) - auto, every second hour
Mg: Red Sea Reef Foundation C (concentrate, stock when it's finished) - manual, daily
    Halogens (I2, Br2, F2): Red Sea Colors A - manual, daily
Potassium & Boron: Red Sea Colors B - manual, daily
Fe & Complementary Metals: Red Sea Colors C - manual, daily
Trace Elements: Red Sea Colors D - manual, daily
Amino Acids: Nyos Absolute Aminos - manual, daily

dosage frequency: (daily, weekly) See previous question
water test intervals: (fortnightly, weekly, monthly) weekly
stocking density: (provide qty of each)
    Total Corals 18
    SPS 2 (1x Montipora, 1x Pocillopora (frag))
    LPS 6 (2x Euphyllia, 1x Trachyphyllia, 2x Fungia, 1x Echinophyllia)
Soft corals, polyps, shrooms 9 (6x Zoa colonies, 1x Briareum, 2x Ricordea)
    Clams
    Other 1 (1x Acalycigorgia)
do you do water changes: (percent/volume & frequency) In the beginning 5% weekly, but realised it's pointless doing so little, so now that I'm dosing 10% only when needed (seldom, mostly when something seems wrong). 2.5% twice a week when my QT tank is running, as I use my display tank water for QT water changes.

    do you test for:
    Iodide Total Iodine
    Strontium No
    pH Yes
    Potassium Yes
Would you like to change anything in your reef regime? test more if testkits are more accessible, monitor and tweak more parameters? maybe perform more substantial waterchanges? what would you like to do given a large budget?
Currently experimenting with higher Magnesium. Want to experiment with higher Potassium next. Want to start testing less (maybe fortnightly) for stuff that has been very stable, and start testing for stuff I don't currently test for; Boron (it's part of my Red Sea Potassium dose, so I'll need to test it if I up the recommended dose) & Strontium (this is currently included in my Red Sea Reef Foundation A (Ca) dose, so I probably need to test for it too)

    Tank Age: 1y 10m
Tank Volume (tank + sump + fuge): 450L
    Avg daily consumption of:
Ca: Maybe 5ppm (difficult to say since I mostly just raise the amount I dose when I see my tests indicate Ca is falling)
Alk: Maybe 0.2 dkH I guess
    Mg: +- 20 ppm i think
Do you use a calcium reactor: No, only Marine magic doser
What you dose: (brand and product) DIY Ca (CaCl2), DIY Mg (MgCl2), Reef fusion Seachem for Alk
dosage frequency: (daily, weekly) every 30 min or so with doser
water test intervals: (fortnightly, weekly, monthly) monthly now (more in the beginning when figuring out how much I needed)
stocking density: (provide qty of each)
    Total Corals
    SPS: 5
    LPS: 5
    Soft corals, polyps, shrooms: 20
    Clams: 0
    Other: 3 Anemones
do you do water changes: (percent/volume & frequency)
maybe 20% once a month if I have time
    do you test for:
    Iodide: A few times
Strontium: Tried a few times but having trouble getting accurate results with test kit (salifert). Probably just because I am making a mistake somewhere
pH: not for the last year
    Potassium: No

Would you like to change anything in your reef regime? test more if testkits are more accessible, monitor and tweak more parameters? maybe perform more substantial waterchanges? what would you like to do given a large budget?
I would like to go more in the direction of the DSR setup of Glenf to really transparently control all the elements like he is doing, which would require more testing and more DIY chemicals. Also probably needs better flow and temperature control so my SPS can actually grow and have a proper mixed reef.

If I was by the means I would do everything by the book but I am not. I have managed to learn over the past 3 years what works and what does not "for me". If my fish and corals are happy, so am I.

Okay @dallasg, so my curiosity is getting the better of me. Did you find anything useful in the info you received, or was the sample too small? What were you looking for?

i have 7 samples, i was hoping for 10, but i will start writing my findings and post them
of course it will be more assumption based on my experiences interacting with reefers and these results

    thanks for all those replied

The aim was to see what we do, vs problems reported, vs solutions available both commercial and DIY

trying to find trends and see what would make this hobby explode in growth so that we can have more variety, MORE FRAG SWAPS, more Expo's and Bring SA to the lime light of the reefing fraternity...

This is something I'd really like to see. Our hobby needs to be more sustainable, and I thinks this goes a long way towards it.

Ha, yes, more than 10 would be a good start. But it has to start somewhere.

    Greetings from the USA.

I am here because I am interested in learning how people over the pond(s) reef. It seems there is a lot of experimenting with dosing and I want to learn. I would love to dose and not do water changes...

I have a build thread if anyone is interested, but for now I am going to look around and see what I can glean...
