Diatoms are generally not much to worry about and is quite normal in tanks even up to 1 year old. It generally goes away over time, I have found if you reduce your lighting hours it tends to help quite a bit until the diatoms have worked their way out of your system. Here are some snippets for some reading for you...

I don't have any links unfortunately as I saved this info quite a while ago.

There is a lot of 'buy this' and 'buy that' but in all honesty, if your parameters are stable and your tank is otherwise healthy, diatoms will disappear on their own, you just need to sit it out. :)

Light does play a big factor in diatom growth, so the extra bit of sunlight may be fuelling it. As you can see, overnight the diatoms disappear, but as soon as the lights are on it's back in full force.

    How old is your tank?

Have you introduced any new live rock recently?

Diatoms are also caused by mini-cycles in the tank, for example when we add new pieces of live rock.

the tank is about 8 months old , so still new
new rock was added that long ago

so mini cycles do occur ? ok - makes sense

Diatoms is nothing to worry about. Just let it go away by itself. Its unsightly but it serves as food for other organisms.

hello ighsaan, i dont think ive welcomed you to masa so heres a belated welcome.

as your tank is still cycling it could well be diatoms, but the presence of the small bubbles in it makes me think it might be cyano bacteria instead. perhaps you could give us a pic so we can help you Id the stuff? I am assumeing that you dont have any fish or corals in the tank yet, and its important that you dont add anything for ba while longer so that the inbalances in your cycles which are causing the diatoms/cyano bacteria can stabilise first ok:)

DZ cant you close the curtains and stop the direct angled sunlight for a few days while you are at work? that way you will see what the effect of the sunlight is having, although i think yiu have a slight mini cycle for one or other reason and that its not only the sunlight, although that can be a contributing factor
