I have a RSM 250. I read about issues with the stock heater and a few (I don't know how many) tanks overheating. For peace of mind I bought a Sicce heater for the tank and planned to use the stock RSM heater for heating and mixing my salt water.

I mixed 50 liters, put a pump in the bucket to circulate and added the RSM heater set at 28 degrees. That was last night. I checked it this evening and the temp was a tank boiling 43 degrees!

    Well it's sterile now! :)

The idea of parboiled critters due to a sticking heater gives me nightmares.

Is there some sort of recommendation regarding routine replacement of heaters? The contacts might become corroded over time due to the spark made, no?

sorry to hear, but i spent R200 and got a temp controller from a electrical supply company, i set the heater for 24, and the controller has its own temp probe so no chance of boiling over...

I have found that all heaters are unreliable over time. I run all my heaters off a separate electronic termostat. Bought off ebay for about R100 with free delivery.

sjoe you dodged a bullet there mate, most of the heaters (apart from the jagger) have given me problems in the past, always best to have another form of control in place as a failsafe
