So another holiday and not a lot to do so I decided to knock together a diy shrimp hatchery.

Followed a couple of examples on YouTube and here it is:

Had a heater in at first but with the lamp so close I thought it was overkill.

    Now the wait - they say 24 - 48 hours .. Let's see

    P.s. Any advice welcome

I want to also start a culture for a mandarin... Could you please elaborate how you've set it up please and tell mewhere you buy the eggs or where I can get it. Also around what's the cost?

Very easy to do. 2 litre coke Bottle air pump and a light. 24 hours later they start to hatch.

Hey. I take water straight from my dt so 1.025. Buy the eggs from a local pet shop. Most will have.

do you use a airstone or just the airline directly from the pump?

Airline direct from the pump will work perfectly!

I used RO water as the shrimp egg mix has salt, Evian water bottle with the bottom cut off taped into a coffee cup to keep it upright.
Small air pump on low with the airline held inside the bottle (line into the cap area) with an airline clip & a lamp over the top.
Here are the eggs I used:

So switched off the air for 20 min and there is definite movement, but even with a magnifying glass can't make out much. Added around 50ml to DT and 50ml to fuge with chaeto.

Also a tiny bit of spiralina to the hatchery with half a pinch of chaeto

Will update again in a day or two

P.s. Is it true they reach adulthood in around 3 weeks?

You are wasting your time putting them in the sump, they will get filtered out, they are not strong swimmers like pods. I never got mine to grow to adulthood on "green" flake foods but they did grow when I had them in a tank in the sun, with lower salinity (I think 1.015).
Deshelling them with bleach makes it easy to see when they have actually hatched, there are plenty of howto articles and videos available on the web.

Fed DT twice with it now, they are still very small but my clowns seem to enjoy the challenge.
May be time for me to get a mandarin, this is so easy
