    Hi everyone!

    MAN what a story...

Been doing tropical all my life and yes started marine a month ago. So exciting!

Heres the thing, asked a pet shop what I needed if I wanted to start a marine tank.Their answer was live rock, salt and a lot of chemicals to cycle and that my canister filter is fine.

Anyhow that is what I did. After some reeding on this great forum I relized that I was taken for a ride.

I then set up my sump which I had and added a skimmer to get a Berlin system running.

So there I was with a nice 4ft sump Berlin skimmer system.

I then went to Pet Stop and was introduced to Shaun. I must say I was impressed with their service and been doing business with them ever since.

I hate doing things half way...Then the hobby swollowed me whole and the rest is history.

I am now 4 weeks in and here is my setup: basic guys but I hope and trust good enough!

6ft tank, corner overflw (exotic aquarium factory tank)
65 kg LR, kenya and indonesia mix
150 liter big boy sump. (filled with LR and a deep sand bed, water flowing over the sand)
Reeftek ts1 and reeftek ts2 skimmer in 2 different chambers.
    2 x 300 watt heaters
3000 liter per hour return pump
    Lighting unit (6 x 1,2 m t5's), 324 watts
    Sirculation, 5 pumps, 2 x 6000 l/h bi-pums. 2 x 3000 l/h pumps, 1 x 1200 l/h pump

Live stock, 1 bi-colour angel, 1 chocolate tang, 3 electric blue hermits, 3 snails.(a bit early, my issue was that they were added to my 4ft tank and then I changed. Had to move them around. Been 4 days and they seem fine?)

I hope this is good enough to start of with, running a healthy tank.

Any advice would be appreciated greately

    Thanks

Planning to do 20% bi weekly water changes.

    My parameters:
    Ph, 8.1
    Nitrate, 5 ppm
    Temp, 28 deg
    Sg, 1.026

Having issues lading pics with my Ipad. Will load soon o you guys can comment please.

    Thanks a mil..

I am just so worried about everything!

Desperately want to do it right.

I have added bacteria so I hope that all is well.

My tank is def noy cycled 100%.

I will keep a close eye.

So much to learn I suppose.

    It is extremely exciting!

see you found a better LFS. Pity you started where you
Livestock you have 2 fish and then snails and hermits. The snails should get food on the life rock that was transferred. The hermits should be OK

Do not add more fish. Please check the parameters first. Let the system stabilize first. The life rock, depending on quality could still be cycling. Meaning any dead material deep inside it could still be rotting away. Can add bacteria boosters to hurry things up, but nothing good happens fast in marine tanks.

    Thanks Riaan.

I agree. I will not add more for at least 4 weeks and continiously checking parameters.

Yes the tang is more mustard orange than on te pics. I checked it on Animal world.com which I was under the impression that my chocolate was mimicing the Heralds angel. Looks exactly like that picture there.

    Could be wrong though.

So by the way, Animal world.com has got extremely comprehensive descriptions of fish, check it out.

    I will send pictures now.

    Cheers

Can you get a close-up of those LR's...? I cannot make out what is growing on them...just want to make sure it's not Aptasia...

Despite its beautiful appearance, it is an aggressive and invasive creature that is capable of overrunning an entire aquarium. When the anemone is disturbed by another animal, it ejects a series of stinging strands that contain nematocysts, which consist of venomous cells that can damage or even kill aquarium fauna.

The majority of tank owners consider the anemone to be a pest, which most often enters the tank on coral or liverock. They are usually far too small to see at this point. However, in no time at all, the Aiptasia is able to spread and take over the whole tank.

    Hi guys,

    Here goes.

First of all I am a bit worried about making a silly expensive mistake.

I read through the thread where all the peops mentioned which silly mistakes they made in their marine life. What an awesome thread. Learnt a great deal there.

I do however understand that if one follows the recipe in terms of checking parameters, doing water changes and having a known system eg, Berlin setup etc that all should be fine...and off course patience when adding livestock.

Here goes more pictures and then I will post my silly questions,

Here are my questions: (I have found many answers in various threads, but please bare with me when asking these)

    1. Is that a Chocolate Tang?. (Picture too yellow through camera. It is a bit more orange brownish)

    2. Should I start doing water changes now through the phases of cycling and how much? 10% per week? Does this 10% have to be the right temp as well? Riaan I read a thread where you mention that it is not necessary. PH and SG will be as close as possible.

    3. Should my sump's glass sliders be open or closed? Gas exchange?

    4. Should I restrict my water flow into the sump with the valve? It is currently all the way open and as you can see there are some bubbles when it enters the sump, do I want that for more oxygen or not? If I close it more the bubbles goes away.

    5. I have my old heaters in there (x2) They are not submerged so only glass in water. Should I get marine heaters? I know that through evaporation water might get into the heaters from the top. They are submerge-able though. (Read this on a thread)

    6. Am I right in saying that I need to add more live rock to my sump as well as sand?

    7. In terms of my skimmers, I was advised that the bubbles of the reeftek must break on that black line where the cup starts for best results.

Now for the past 2 days I cant get it right. I adjust and then an hour later it breaks way too high or too low. Is this normal? Water changing etc?

    8. I am currently testing Nitrates and PH. Please bare in mind that I am planning a FOWLR first with no corrals. Is this OK for now or should I test more parameters? I know more is better but I don't want to over do it for now. Should I test Ammonia now as well as I am not fully cycled?

    9. That is not aptasia growing on the rock. I did however spot one small one. Will post close up of rocks.
The top colorful rocks are Indonesia. Nice things growing on there. Can someone identify what it is?
Riaan I bought the rock as cured. Do you mean that it needs to settle in my tank as well, thus not
    fully cured?

Cant think of any more for now. I appreciate all the help. Thanks,
