    Sup people!!

I'm new to MASA, being trolling the forums but haven't really gotten around to making my own thread so here it is :)

Ok, so I obviously have a BOYU TL-550. Its a 128L, 510Lx570Wx670H. Pretty standard with skimmer, heater, return pump and UV light etc. I currently have a +- 2cm aragonite base (should I make the base thicker???) with +- 15Kgs Live Rock.

    Future plans

So I'm planning to mod my BOYU up in the near future :D

    * Mod 1 will be a PLC. Will run the blue lights and while lights separately, along with the digital themo, heater and wave maker

(for those of you who do not know @Mc :D - a PLC is a Programmable logic controler. You can pick one up for about R600+. Its basically a computer box that is programmed to do whatever you want it to do. So the lights will be on the timer (PLC function), the digital thermo will will read when the water drops below a certain temperature and the PLC will turn the heater on, likewise when it gets too hot turn the heater off (or chiller on if I ever get one)

    * Mod 2 will be a LED upgrade. I've learnt that the BOYU's lighting system isn't the strongest so I was hoping to fix this by adding some LEDs. Don't really know much about this right now but am going to read into it so ANY ADVICE is most welcome

That's about it. If anyone has advice, be it rock formation changes, wave maker placing, LED advice etc, please post it. It will be much appreciated :)

    Here is my tank

That sound very interesting will be looking foward to seeing how it works out.
If you look at what me and quite a few others on here have done with leds you will get some interesting ideas.

welcome to masa yusig, great to have you finally join:)

personally id add a little more LR to lift the reef a littkle, also add some aragonite if you can (maybe 3-5cm more) and id place the heater in the back compartment.

also look at lifting the powerhead up a little and point it downwards towards the lr you might get better flow and detritus moveing out the LR better.

nice to hear you are going DIY too :)

Thanks guys. The heater is already in the back (not sure why it was in the display area in the first place). I'm thinking of getting some more aragonite or sand for my base (I like the sand look more). Got my digital thermo yesterday so I'm atleast making some progress, then again, reefing is a patient process from what I hear :D

Thanks!!! As long as it's harmless I'm fine. Also should I wait for the hairy algae to grow longer or can I pull it out already

Sorry I cant really help you there, havent encountered it yet (touch wood).
I'd say if you are able to pull it of then do it now already.

Im not sure if that is hair algae how long is it.
I say leave it as theres not that much you can do about the algae during the cycle.
The main reason I pull out hair algae is when its too the long the snails and other algae eaters don't seem to like it and when I say long I mean between 2 and 5cm.

I've compared it to other pictures and it seems like it is algae hairs. It's only like 1cm long at the moment (that's the longest in the tank). I also found like this red flower type of thing. It looks like the end of a tube worm but read and much smaller.

It doesn't have a tube tho (as far as I can see) ... It's at the back of my tank so I cant get a good picture of it.
