That's just ridiculous, id rather diy my own led unit than pay that, you can buy the whole tank for less than that 2nd hand.

Well looking at other 35W LED units out there.
For example Vertex Illumilux Marino Blanco 600
    Goes about R2500
so very close on price as well as wattage on both.

another close by unit on wattage is the Aquabeauty G5 35w but I do not know at what price range they go.

Can also look at the KESSIL A150W, but OK, it is almost R1000 more expensive.

But on all of these you loose the hood.

Yes, you can get a TL550 secondhand for that price, but then you still need to get a light.

I'm at exactly the same crossroad. Got a TL550 waiting in the garage. Do not want to use the standard PL tubes that needs to be replaced every 6 months, are not freely available at all the LFS. And cost from 360 to 520 a round depending on brand.

I do want to keep the hood. Without it and you do limit yourself on fish choices. Especially those that like to commit suicide by jumping out. Even Clowns jump.

Only issue I got is the TL550 LED hood got 20 leds. Total wattage is 35W. So I would like to know the led configuration they have. Plus the controls.

It's true those units do cost about the same, but that's why going the diy route is better, i can now build 36 leds into my hood where tubes are for around R650.

each 30cm strip got 24 leds in it, total 6W, so 0.25w leds in use.
And at $39.00 each times 10, plus $36.95 for transformer, at today's exchange rate is R 4,329.86

    OUCH...

and how much does 4x Xbox's cost for the heatsinks?

See if you find someone with a milling machine to make custom heatsinks. Unfortunately to words customize and cheap are vary rarely used in the same sentence though

I saw that, his kids and the neighbor's kids are all still wondering what happened to their X-boxes.

Sure we should have another heatsink profile available that can be used. Even if I have to use 2 alongside each other.

a 36 DIY led unit will cost as much as the tl550 led hood.. so from money saving perspective I'm not sure if its a good idea to go that way.

Hey MC, I have one and I love it. It has a downfall but that can be solved if you want to dabble with diy. Basically it has 1 power cable, so if you use a timer, its on or off. I don't actually know if the blue LED's are a bit bright for "night mode" but I have been manually switching the white lights on in the morning and turning them off after 8 hours.

That is a bit of an issue, as people who would buy this probably wouldn't want to play with too much diy.
    Thanks for the info.
