I notice that there are very very fine particles in the water. I have added some fine filter wool in the 1st chamber to try and catch the particles but it does not get caught in the wool. I will try and get a picture of this but it does not show that well on the camera. My 40lt Nano has been running for 5 months now in the water is crystal clear from the time that I started the tank. Am I not doing something right on the TL-550?

what substrate do you have? did you rinse it beforehand?

    What flow pumps as well.

and return pump, do you actually have enough flow via the filtration chamber to pull in all the fine particles?

Substrate tends to clog a bit later after a couple of weeks. In the beginning it is always very loose. Sand or Aragonite.

@RiaanP, in my 40lt I had the very very fine argonite. I the TL-550 I added the one that is a little more coarse than the very very fine one in the 40lt Nano.

    Yip rinsed it.

I only have one Sicce Voyager Nano 2000lt/ph and when I later break up my 40tl there is another Sicce Voyager Nano 1000lt/ph.

This is still the standard return pump in the Boyu TL-550. There is good flow.

What do you have in your rear chambers? Are you dosing anything ? Please post a pic of your tank. Might be easier to see what is going on.

@charl Stanhope, I will try and post pics tonight.

    From Right to Left

1st chamber - fine filter wool about six layers, Standard filter sponge that comes with the system
2nd chamber - standard protein skimmer
3rd chamber - fine filter wool two layers, 3 sera siporax bags
4th chamber - 1 bag matrix carbon, standard uv filter, heater, return pump

I am dosing Brightwell Aquatics Microbacter 7 but that was for the two weeks only. Any help with dosing would be appreciated.

see if you can get one of those filter pumps
    something like this
    [IMG]

With filter wool inside, so you are not dependent on the water must first enter the filter part.

I think you have a bit too much filter wool in there. Reduces the flow in the rear chambers. Personally I would remove the filter wool in the 3rd chamber and the big sponge in the 1st. Just use filter floss in the 1st. Its Easier to just replace the filter wool in chamber one than to rinse and replace that big sponge(also waste a whole chamber). Then you can put your heater n the 1st chamber as the water level wont drop. in the 4th chamber the water level will drop and your heater might be exposed.

I have no experience with sera siporax but purigen and phosguard worked extremely well for me. You can also move the carbon to the 1st chamber. More flow. But you can only do these changes by removing the sponge.

    Thanks mate,

I build a diy media rack with 3 chambers. One for purigen, one for phosguard and the other for carbon. On top of the rack I had my chaeto - The media rack stopped it from being sucked to the 4th chamber. I then had a 3w led chip running off a cell charger for growth.

I also added an extra return pump to my fourth chamber returning water to the 1st chamber. This gave me more flow through my media.

Did you build the rack out of perspex?

The return pump in the 4th chamber what was the lt rating on it?

Earlier this week I was looking at a rack like this to add chaeto. Glad i saw your tank now. It really does look stunning.

Do not put the heater in the last chamber.

Unless you got an ATU and you trust it 100%

Any other chamber, other than the chamber where the water level fluctuates due to evaporation.

@RiaanP - will see where I can fit the heater. Is it okay for a heater to touch all the filter media if you add the heater between it. Or i'll have to add it with the Skimmer.

why dont you move your filter media to the 2 nd and 3rd chambers and move the heater to the 1st.

WRT my diy media rack, I used egg crate tied with cable ties and then pvc glue. simple, but worked. Not that easy to get PVC in Hermanus.

    Heater can touch media etc.
It will not burn anything, as the water flow will cool it immediately.

I have moved the heater to chamber 1

Now I still have the damn fine white dust like particles floating around. I will get some pictures up over the weekend. @RiaanP I will try and get a filter running on the inside, I just wanted to leave that option for last did not want any equipment in the DT.

It will be temporary, until issue sorted. But OK, can be last option

Do you have flow pumps inside your DT ? Where are they positioned?

I only have one Sicce Voyager Nano 2000lt/ph and when I later break up my 40tl there is another Sicce Voyager Nano 1000lt/ph.

The one I have in now is just below the hole for the spray bar. I have not added the spray bar so the water coming from return pump is spraying straight against the front glass.

The Wavemaker is also blowing towards the front glass. But one can see it is not sand it is fine fine white particles. It does not go into the rear filter chambers. Or maybe it does but goes through the whole system and gets sprayed out again. I have switched off the wave maker for 24hr to see if the rear filter system could not get rid of the white cloud. No success there....
