Does anybody know if the black plastic on the back of the boyu 550 tank can be scraped off so i can shine a light in from the back to put some chaeto in one of the chambers ?

I think you can. I just had a look at mine and if you want to maybe you should take a sharp blade and just cut a big enough section out of it and pull it off. Or alternatitake it all of but then you'll see all the rear chambers.

My plan was to cut out a section just as big as the box that will hold the lamp. I am not sure which chamber to put it in. I have just my skimmer in the 1st chamber- live rock and an intake to an external canister in the 2nd, the heater and the out pipe from the canister in the 3rd, and the return pump in the last. I am not sure how effective the skimmer is.

I'm sure that'll work if you just want to do it with 1 chamber.
You have to keep that little skimmer clean and tweak it a bit. It took me a while to get mine working properly and it was really crap at one stage but the last couple of months i've been cleaning out around a 3/4 cup of black coffee every day. In my first chamber i've got filter floss, 2nd chamber - skimmer, 3rd chamber - heater, purigen & AC, 4th chamber - return pump.

So maybe move the skimmer to 2nd, and remove live rock. Put the chaeto in 1st ? Does your filter floss sit on the bottom of the chamber ? And how often do you change it ? I assume you don't have the sponges anymore.

Yeah, took out all the sponges and ceramic rings when i started with this tank. The filter floss actually sits halfway down the first chamber. I took some egg crate and cut a square piece that just seem to fit snug into it and pushed it halfway down. I then closed all the other inlets down the side so that it can act as a overflow. I change the filter floss twice a week.
I think that if you want to go with chaeto then you should maybe put it in the 2nd chamber and leave the skimmer in the 1st.

Will that not cause the chaeto to be sucked into the inlet for the canister ? I have resorted to adding an air pump to blow air into the skimmer as it sucks air intermittently. I get light tea colour at best and have never had anything better.

Those skimers at best are pretty junk. I used to only get tea colour but for some reason my little skimmer is working it's tail off...
You're right about the canister sucking up the chaeto. What is in the canister? Why do you want a canister aswell?

Maybe then put skimmer in 2nd and chaeto in first?

I just asked my lfs to spare me some. If you buy it it's quite expensive but you can get it from aircon shop, they call air diffuser or something...

good luck with that, very hard to find.

PS: Not from aircon guys, rather lighting suppliers, as it is a lighting diffuser ;)
