Ah the Blue Squamosa Clam, the rarest color form of the widely available Tridacna squamosa is almost never seen, but a “big” batch of these rare gems is already in the United States. Any given year, we may see one, maybe two nice specimens of this beautiful clam and they are never recent imports, they are usually a nice old stable clam that’s been living for years in a reef aquarium that we happen to be visiting. This time around, some nice beautiful blue-spotted squamosa clams have appeared in a small batch at Renaissance Aquatics and almost two dozen of them will soon be distributed around the country.

The handful of blue squamosa clams that we spied on at Renaissance Aquatics were all of the spotted variety, between two*and*three inches with undeniable, large folds of Tridacna squamosa. At this size the blue squamosa clams don’t look all that different from a nice metallic blue spotted crocea clam however, these blue spotted squamosa clams will grow into amazing large bivalves truly worthy of being called giant clams.
