    One for the gurus,

I need to block facebook on my network at the office. Not because I am nasty but because last week while one of my staff was on facebook my anti virus alerted me of a portscan originating from facebook IP.

    Any ideas

As with any form of coltrol, try gentle persuasion first, then resort to the drastic measure of blocking and having to nanny people. Most firewalls will allow you to have a safe list and blocked list (so called white and black lists). Do you firewall your perimeter?

Need a few details about your network setup at work.
What you can resort to is a "cheap trick".
    Edit the file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
("hosts" is the file, no extension) in notepad.
Copy the example and make a line like this:
What this does is kinda tricks the pc into thinking Incompatible Browser | Facebook is hosted on itself, which it obviously isn't so it just doesn't work.

Cool thanx rory...if they dont listen I'll try this

"gentle persuation" ...does a baseballbat qualify ? ;)

i use a Belkin N series wireless modem / router with built in firewall & bitdefender total security (so I guess i would have to blacklist the site on each pc then)

Sure that router would have a firewall setting where you can add sites somewhere.
