    hi

I was hoping somebody could clear a few things up for me. I am looking for a juvenile black ocellaris clownfish. my lfs does get them in. I am sure that they are tank raised.

but they are never completely black, more dark brown with lighter brown/orange mouth area.

I am looking for the completely black one. with no colour variations. will the juvenile become entirely black later or are they different fish.

Good question on the juvenile, ive seen them now and then at my LFS, AAA Grade black but then they more brown than black but always very small like 2-4cm...

I also wanted a black clown fish but then decided against it as they never seem to be black...

That's my worry. I know that they will darken as they mature but I have also seen adult ones that have the same brown tinge and orange mouth which I do not want.

They start out with orange around their faces and then become completely black and white.

Usually after about a year and a half or so, but the orange faces sometimes come back later, usually around the time they are ready for reproduction. I'm sure the genes also play a large part.

Yeah thats small, if I buy a pure black clown I want it around 5-7cm. Dont mind having the smaller orange ones, but this also depends on your size tank.

I had small orange clowns in my 1.2 and you have to close to the tank to apot them...

Black and white ocellaris pairs produce black and white ocellaris juveniles. They are light brown with an orange mouth and only become completely black as they mature (this change starts at around four months with my black and white ocellaris juveniles). It is advisable to find out more about the parents when purchasing light brown juveniles because it is possible to cross breed an orange ocellaris with a black and white ocellaris. Such a ocellaris juvenile should be sold as a Mocha ocellaris or Caramel ocellaris.
