Little on/off the subject, doesn't fragging reduce genetical diversity of the species, because you basically just have clones of the original.

Is there no way to get coral to sexually reproduce in captivity ?

I think the difficulty is the fact that all the eggs released either get eaten or skimmed out of the system

Sorry guys moved it over here, nice topic to discuss.

Ok, seeing that we will never reintroduce these corals to the oceans, is biodiversity an issue?

What will we do when the earths surface water temp rises by 2-3 degrees. We might have to reseed the ocean one day.

That is always a possibility but as I understand it its not really practical, what does everyone else think?

I was watching a programme caled 6 degrees on national geographic. Concerning and I only threw that comment out as a possibility.

You know I think the minute we exclude possibilities the future might be very bleak:blushing:

From a previous thread it seemed the quantities would not be significant enough, but hey those could always spawn

The simple fact that, the globe is getting warmer, has done before, and will do again, (many many times over the last 500,000,000 years) and there are still corals/fish etc means one thing, no matter how much we panic or shout about global warming, it's far to late for us to actually do anything( or rather our govt's to do anything) but the world will recover, and we will be long gone

I do so agree with you

I suppose like all the other species that have gone extinct

No dont get me wrong I am not saying we must not do anything we have to do our part and all we can. However the earth has more time than any of us, it might take her 20 000years to heal but she will.

But neither do I want my kids not to see animals because we killed them.

But before we go all doom and gloom, species have become extinct for the last few hundred million years, we are not totally to blame, many creatures become too specialised and are unable to adapt to natural changes in the environment (as opposed to anything we blame ourselves for)

I know there is only so much we can do as individuals and a lot of people still scoff at the idea of global warming. I find it hard to believe that the major contributors are not prepared to reduce there pollution. The USA being the biggest culprit.

Trouble is, telling people to lose their big cars and that petrol will double in cost is not exactly a vote winner

very interesting, something i have thought about alot.
i am in the process of starting to frag farm, not for profit, but to try something along the lines of conservation by re-selling aqua-cultured stock. and make some dough to keep it self-sustaining.

i think my us hobbists creating artificial reefs in our oceans, eg coral castles, we can "create" new species by them adapting to different environments, i am still researching and conversing with marine biologists on the impact of this and if its viable.

on fragging i would keep several species of the same family in separate tags and going to try sell frags from 2 diff sources, eg a rock with 2 shrooms from diff frag sources so that things dont become to sterile, hope this all makes sense.

i am doing the same with LR, collecting as many sources as i can and seeding bio-rock etc so that i can have super LR...

i will start a thread this weekend when i start setting up my frag room
