    Hi guys

Can anyone tell me what the advantage is of having bio rock in it's own compartment in the sump. I am planning on doing this, is there something more beneficial to use or is bio rock the way to go? Oh, btw I already have a dsb planned in the sump.

    Thanks

Therer is no real advantage. It tends to trap detritus which could give you nitrate problems. The best is still live rock for your biological filter. The DSB along with the rock will facilitate the denitrification

    Pros of Bio Rock:

    - nice and contructed shapes for aquascaping
    - Cheeper - always helps
    - don't deplete the oceans stock

    Cons

    - intially doen't have any bacteria / live
    - not as good as LR for filtration purposes.
    - if not made correctly it may disintegrate over time
    - longer "curing" process
    - doesn't look natural until coraline algae grows over it.

IMO, don't think it would be a detritus trap anymore than LR, just ensure you have enough flow.

What is cheato? I would love to put LR in there but I want to use LR in my DT first (damn expensive!) What other alternatives are there? Or should I rather Maximise the siza of the DSB and forget the fourth compartment?

    Hi Caleb,

Chaeto is a macro algea that that will help absorb nutrients(nitrates, phosphates etc)out of the water column. You would ideally like to place a 6500k light source above it as this will increase photosynthesis and thus increase it's productivity.Run the light above the cheato at night and it will then help stabilise the pH fluctuation at night(pH drops at night)

Chaeto can be used to supplement your existing nutrient export methods i.e.skimming, DSB, Live rock etc.:)

Here's a pic of what Cheato looks like

    Looks like tangled fishing line...

Could I suspend cheato on egg crate over the dsb?

Any idea where I could find LR at a decent price?

Just place it straight on top of your DSB.
Have you checked up with our sponsors for LR Caleb?

Planning a visit to two of the sponsers tomorrow..., but if they are on par with other lfs's it's way too expensive...

Crispin, that is a great price, I will check it out, hopefully he will have some left when my sump is ready to house it, I can put it in when starting a Cycle, can't I? Would It be daft to start cycling my Sump before my DT is ready? - Basically from the return pup straight back to the skimmer?

Caleb i know he has it out a mature system that was broken down, so warr is keeping it wet and cycling as we chat.

get your tank up and going, sort out the sump etc and then when you are ready start putting LR in. It is to your advantage as its already matured to a large degree so you get a healthy poplutaion of things in there which should shorten the cycle a little for you. Leave it cycling with warr untill you are ready.

if you get from a LFS then by all means hook your sump up and skimmer and cycle it like that, but for now warr is doning that for you already. Nice fella he is!

Yes well cured LR is bes to put in the system while the tank is cycling. It will be an excellent idea to get your sump cycling. This will help in making the entire cycle faster and your pods and other life will multiply faster aswell.
