Calloplesiops altivelis Steindachner 1903, the Comet or Marine Betta. Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea. To a bit over six inches. A shy species that requires a dark cave and peaceful tankmates to thrive. Aquarium image. Oh, is this fish a Batesian mimic of the Moray Eel, Gymnothorax meleagris? Some think the head of the moray and the tail of the Comet are similar...
When ever ive seen this fish they hiding !

Found near reefs, and in caves and crevices along drop-offs . Nocturnal, hides under ledges and in holes by day It's false eye which is actually the dorsal fin ocellus confuses predators because it poses an inverted image of a fish. When alarmed, it will poke it's head into a hole and expose it's tail end which mimics the head of the moray eel .Has been reared in captivity

Hi Dean - got one recently..... mine's hiding away most of the time. Last night I saw it for the 1st time "out in the open" (just outside the entrance of the cave-system in my tank)....

I target feed the vicinity where I think he is in, every 2nd of thrid day.... I have read conflicting articles, where they say this fish is a VERY slow eater, and that it does not eat too often (mostly meat eater - and in the wild, it catches life foods).... another web-site said that this fish must be fed daily....

Mine seems to be doing fine.... I have also read that it could take some time before they do indeed decide to make their appearance.....

I always wanted one of these - ever since I saw it in a very old marine keeping book that I have.....

The only thing to be beware of: it might chow down on your existing fish - if they are small enough to catch.... and if they might happen to wander into it's lair in the rock-work...

Otherwise - they say that it is a hardy fish....

BTW: I have not yet SEEN mine eat yet - it just target feed it pieces of pink-shrimp... and sometimes pieces of hake.... I am sure that this fish eats, because he looks healthy (not showing any signs that he is becoming thinner and thinner)....

BTW: not a very active fish...

Viper Joe covered every thing and so did Jacquesb must just add they are nocturnal predators in the wild, so in the tank they might pose a small problem.
