    Hi All

I am wanting to find out what will be the best filtration that you can add to your tank if you don't have a sump? I know you get HOB protein skimmers but what else can be added to improve water quality?

I am talking a tank that is as is, no special or extra compartments.

    Thank you

Hey what size tank do you have or plan on setting up? You can use a canister filter or HOB filters like an Aquaclear with different media but long term you are better off with a sump or a DIY internal filter like the back of a TL550.

I have a sumpless tank which is around 330L. I have a Deltec MCE600 HOB skimmer which is awesome. I also have an ozone unit which has definitely helped with water quality. I do a 15% water change every second week. I keep a close eye on the water parameters to make sure all is okay. The tank is now over a year and a half old and doing well. It is well stocked and I feed well. I supplement strontium twice a week and iodide once a week.

It was a 90cm tank and see that the sump option is 10 times better than a regular tank with no sump. The problem I had is that it was a Reef Octopus BH1000 HOB skimmer which did great removing organic waste but I still had floating break off from the live rock floating around the tank which didn't look so good. I did a 25% water change weekly which kept everything in shape and also test parameters every 2 weeks. I just wanted to see if there was more equipment that would conveniently fit on a regular tank to improve water quality and clarity.

I had an Aquaclear 500 running carbon, purigen and phos guard as well as filter wool and it kept my tank clean and clear.

Nice clowning. Just a customized aquaclear 500? I tried to customize the skimmer but it is a very tight fit and not much space.

The problem with having all the hang on items is that they are unsightly where as if you have a sump you can hide all of that not to say it cant be done. I think doing a DIY internal filter will be cool

That would actually be great if you put it all into a compartment in the tank. It is a great idea. How big of a tank do you think a Aquaclear 500 can sort out?
