So in reading up all the posts on here- trying to do as much research as possible before starting.. I still have no clue whether or not I should have a substrate or go abre bottom. Indeed aesthetics are important but if BB is better in the long term so be it.

Can anyone explain the advantage of substrate as opposed to BB?
Is there any out and out answer to the debate?
Sorry for the hassle and dumb question

A Beautiful place!
Substrate has the advantage of looking natural, critters lives and breed in there and you can have (later on when tank is matured) blue cheek gobies, sand sifting stars etc etc.
Bare bottom is easy to clean and no detritis can accumulate as you can up your flow to keep it in suspension, where the sand will be all over the place in this case.
I like substrate, but your husbandry needs to be up to date.

BB is for lazy people  - don't shoot me Mek, just kidding :p

Heard this question quiet often. IMO

DSB would offer more stability in terms of nutrient recycling and once stabilised, for the aspiring reefer, a bigger safety net. They also allow you to host a far bigger variety of fishies not to mention the multitude of other fauna that live and depend on the benthic layers

Power failures can be a lot more destructive with a dsb.
