    Bayworld’s Penguin Waddle

Our African Penguin has recently been reclassified as an endangered species and it has been estimated that within 50 years there may no longer be any of these iconic seabirds in our oceans! This is very scary and incredibly sad as a lot of their decline is due to human influence. Bayworld has decided to raise awareness in the Eastern Cape about the plight of our African penguin by doing a penguin waddle. Algoa Bay is home to almost half the world’s total population.

We will be ‘waddling’ from the 12th – 15th October and are our focus is not on fundraising, but is on conservation awareness. The slogan is, “we don’t want your money honey, we want your love”. Each person is to make a ‘penguin promise’ as to what they will be doing to save our planet and in turn our penguins, “waddle you do?”

These promises can be sms’d to 34008 with the keyword “penguin (followed by your promise)” or can be filled in on the penguin promises website or on post cards at the Oceanarium during the waddle. This could be anything from using less electricity to living plastic free or picking up litter on our beaches.

    The waddle 12 – 15 October 2012
There will be two teams walking from different directions and meeting up at a Maitlands on the final day.

Team A – leader Greg Hofmeyr
Will be walking from Penguins Eastern Cape at Cape St Francis to Maitlands.

Day 1 – Cape St Francis to Jeffries
Day 2 – Jeffries to Gamtoos
Day 3 – Gamtoos to Van Standens
Day 4 – Van Stadens to Maitlands

Team B – leader Cherie Lawrence
Will be walking from Bayworld – Maitlands

    Day 1 – Bayworld – Willows
Day 2 – Willows to Seaview Road, Preston Bottlestore
Day 3 – Seaview Prestons to Seaview pool
Day 4 – Seaview to Maitlands

Members of the public are invited to join Bayworld staff and friends to waddle with a cause, creating awareness for the conservation of the endangered African Penguin species. Choose a day to walk with us or be brave and walk all four days! Each waddler will receive a complimentary ticket to Bayworld that they can use at their leisure.
Waddlers must wear black and white or dress like a penguin. Banners, signs, flags are welcome – as long as they are of penguins. See the penguin promises website for some ideas and Bayworld for more information.

    The Picnic
The highlight of the event will be the on the final day of the waddle, 15 October 2012, where we will be having a picnic with the penguins at Bayworld. This will be the first of many exciting functions hosted by the Friends of Bayworld. It will be at 16h00 until 19h00 in the oceanarium where we will be having special interactions with our penguins and seals. Tickets are available from the Oceanarium staff at R20 for adults and R10 for children. The function will be free for friends of Bayworld on presentation of their membership card. Public are invited to bring along their picnic baskets and drinks and join us for a sundowner evening with a difference!

Join us for this very special event and Make your promise today…. WADDLE YOU DO?!

I'm in Abu Dhabi, but will be back for a short while in PE this month, Robyn asked me to spread the news. I think I will possibly do the Sunday or Monday.
