An opportunity to see the ugly horrible runts that bit my ear in the Tropical Tank

    Bayworld AUTUMN Special

BAYWORLD invites all residents of Nelson Mandela Bay to participate in a SPECIAL FAMILY EVENT over the upcoming long weekend, 20 -21 March 2011.

Reduced admission for adults, R20 (half price) and children FREE accompanied by a paying adult.

The programme for the day includes activities not routinely available to the public, such as crocodile feedings, behind the scenes visits at the Snake Park, a penguin experience, shark and tropical fish feeding, viewing of museum collection stores and heritage treasure hunts in the museum. The variety of Eastern Cape reptiles in the Snake Park alongside the popular dinosaur display is a great family experience as well as the journey down memory lane thorough in the Museum.

Bella Bay Café also invites families to a tasty break between activities. The stunning First People Artists exhibition comprising beautifully crafted quilts, featuring San mythologies has been extended into April due to popular demand.

I will try and take photos of the earmunching trio this week, unfortunately if you are not a Friend of Bayworld member the following will be sad news. Friends of Bayworld members can still view for some time afterwards by appointment.

Oceanarium at Bayworld closing 31 March 2011

Bayworld will be closing the Oceanarium doors to the public on 31 March 2011. This is to allow for the final preparations for sending the resident Cape Fur seals and African penguins to the National Zoo, in Pretoria on a breeding loan.

This process has been necessitated to allow the former dolphin lake to be decommissioned. The filtration systems and other infrastructure of the dolphin lake is connected with that of the seal and penguin habitats so shutting down of these spaces will be necessary. Once the animals have been relocated, work will begin on new small tank aquaria of Algoa Bay sea life as well as a new African Penguin habitat, each with independent life support systems.

These exhibits are viewed as interim arrangements as the efforts of the Multiparty Task Team, involving the Department of Sport Recreation Arts and culture, Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs and the Nelson Bay Municipality, are intensified in establishing a funding plan for the redevelopment of a new Oceanarium facility for the City.

The programmes of the Museum and Snake Park will continue as usual, as well as the popular education programme. School Groups and paid-up members of Bayworld Friends will continue to utilize the Oceanarium for scheduled visits, up until the seal and penguins are relocated.

Bayworld invites all residents of Nelson Mandela Bay to come and enjoy the complex which consists of Museum, Snake Park and Oceanarium at reduced admission on the 27 – 28 March 2011, for adults, R20 (half price) and children R10 accompanied by a paying adult

The complex opens at 09:00 and closes at 16:30.

For further details for this weekends reduced admission please contact Alicia on 041 584 0650 or via email on pr@bayworld.co.za.

Bayworld’s oceanarium will be reopening to members of the public from the beginning
of December 2011.The inevitable temporary closure of the oceanarium on 1st April 2011 was necessitated by the need to stop the deterioration of the oceanarium infrastructure and to reduce the operational costs of the facility.

The dangerous and irreparable infrastructure has been closed down and cordoned off, whilst interim improvements have been made which would allow time for the complete redevelopment of Bayworld into a world class tourist attraction.

The improved marine facility excludes the dolphin lake, tropical and predator fish tanks but displays 7 smaller displays with fish and invertebrates focusing of the marine life of Algoa Bay and the Eastern Cape, in addition to renovated housing for the seals and the endangered African penguins.

The renovated smaller aquarium will undoubtedly thrill visitors and also continue to support Bayworld’s education and research programmes.

Seal and penguin talks in the oceanarium are scheduled at 11 am and 3pm daily.
