If you going to use substrate you can add it straight into the tank directly onto the base glass.

If you going bare base (no substrate) you could use PVC pipe 20mm - 50mm diameter off cuts depending on the size of the rock and tank. Place the PVC rings flat on the glass so it's between the pressure points (landing points) of the rock on the glass base when you aqua scape. Easier to do this if you dry aqua scape.

You could also use egg crate pieces if the rock work is not too heavy.

Great question. If you have substrate, some guys use some form of prop to keep their rock of the substrate, I use eggcrate. It's not necessary though.

Even with substrate I use 50mm PVC pipe pieces, not rings. Lay then in the sand, on the glass. And have the rock stack on top of that. Not only does it help to distribute the weight a bit more evenly, reducing excess pressure points, provide a stable platform, but it also lifts your rockwork 50mm closer to the lights. and gobies loves those tunnels.

But with baserock, the shape of most pieces is nice enough to be able to stand flat and stable.
