Does anyone have success stories to share with me please on the possibility of using plastic drums or barrels for a sump? Instead of the traditional glass tank with baffles.

I have acquired a new monster tank ( 2.1 x 75 x 65 ) but am trying to avoid the extra expense of buying a new sump that has to be at least 1.5 to 1.8m long on it's own! Was hoping to use my current DT as the sump... but it's not going to work out.

I was thinking of using a series of large plastic drums - each drum fulfilling it's own function similar to how the baffles seperate the different functions of a glass sump- and then linking them together.

Sounds good in theory... Anyone done it succesfully ???

I think it depends on what form of filtration you plan to use

i have used @ s 210lt drums successfully connected to a 2ft which basically held my skimmer in the past, tonnes of natural food is cultured as the drums act as refuigiums.. my drums were black... if i could ever own my own place i would uitilise the system..

it was very easy to do waterchanges as all the mess was outsiide..

my chiller also worked perfectly as it was placed beside the drums..

I was thinking of trying to keep it similar to what I have now. Sump is currently baffled ( if that is right use of the word ) as : skimmer / live rock / DSB/ carbon and de-nitrifier pellets/ return pump.

I obvously need to upgrade on hardware heavily - I am running a TS2 skimmer on my current 4 foot tank and it goes without saying I will need something more substantial. Probably skim everything straight from DT downpipe into skimmer.

Have been advised to research more on zeo reactors and factor that in, which I will do ...

    Any other advice?

Thanks Leslie - do you have any pictures of that set up in action? Was it reliable as far as leaks and wear and tear were concerned?

no pics unfortunatley.. it was before masa days.. but it was awsome...a few small leaks so id go for square not round bins in future... like the 210lt dirt bins with wheels..

I though that It was the surface area of a DSB and that mattered and not the depth as anything over about 15cm is wast full. I don't have one as I am using Zeo but from what I read on the forum I was under that impression:confused1:.

2 drums the first had a 25lt within it acting as a swirl seperator/sediment filter.. circulation in that 1st 200lt was a pump driving my chiller

the 2 drums where connected and and airlift used to circulaste the water between the 2

2nd drum was pure water no filtration then it went inside to a small trickle tower and then skimmer heater and return pump back into the system..

the first drum was fed from the tank overflow...

Yep - my current DSB is about 70cm long and about 25cm sand depth. I had thought about this - if there is too much water depth over the DSB it is not as effective. Maybe try find a long toolbox type plastic container for this chamber.

I can see lots of mopping up coming my way ...

I have seen pics of this on the forum. Westpack sell 80l rectangle plastic containers that should work. They sell for about R130.00.
