Hi guys, I'm gonna post a pic of my sump and I've got a question to ask. The baffle on the side where the water flows onto the DSB is 3cm higher than the top of the DSB and the one where the water exits is 9cm above DSB. I have noticed that when I take a bit of sump water into a jug and pour it over the DSB that there is a little bit of settlement on the DSB, quite a bit of stuff comes into the water.

    1. Is this normal?

    2. Do you think I need more flow over the DSB?

    3. Are the baffles set out wrong or the wrong sizes?

    4. Your own questions;)

    Thanks
    Luke

Sounds like it, you don't want build-up on the DSB. Going just cause problems in the long run

Sorry, but this is just a poorly set up sand bed altogether... the "smallest" sand bed should have the dimensions of a 88L tank (at least!) and about 8cm deep. And yes, you need more flow over it. In general (imo), DSBs in sumps is a bad idea (unless you have a very big sump.

Ok, thanks for the input sihaya. If I had to fill the sump up, it would probably be about 80litres or so. But what I am going to do is turn the sump around so that the flow flows over and not swirl in the DSB chamber. I'm also going to get another return pump and double the flow through the sump to DT. Will this help?

You're sump might hold 80g, but maybe I'm not being clear... it's not so much the water volume that matters. It's the area of the sand bed. The length and width of the sand bed (the "foot print") should be at least (roughly) 2000 square cm... if that makes sense.

If I were you, I'd get any cheap plastic container (even an animal feeding trough will work-- any storage container that holds water)... and make a remote DSB separate from your sump.

Oh ok, I was told the same thing by someone else. I also read Anthony Calfos article on another forum and he mentioned a remote DSB. I think I might just do some research. Would it be possible for me to move my sand from my sump to a remote container as such that you are mentioning? Or would that pose a problem? Then I could have my sump filled with live rock or something of the sort. I'll look into it, but might just turn the sump around. But I will do some reading. Thanks sihaya

That's weird. Anyway, just to update guys, I'm swapping my sump around to create better flow over the DSB.

Sorry... we've been "arguing" over the exact dimensions of the "minimum" size DSB. We're still debating it in the other thread... "FAQs on Sandbed dimensions"
