I bought a complete system this size (including equipment) for R6500 - second hand - if that helps.

how long is a piece of string? I thought I would set myself a budget of about ten grand when I started my three foot tank but if you start with proper equipment the sky is the limit.

A very WARM welcome to MASA, Newbie! I have a very basic 250 litre cube with sump. The total cost so far (I had the light unit, live rock, return pump and sand) was R6700. This included the cube tank (brand new), stand, sump, very basic T8 30 watt lighting unit, and overflow. The rest of the cost went to some pieces of other live rock pieces, and some soft-corals. ;)

Welcome @The Newbie, hope you have a very welcome stay here on masa!!!

About the costing... I built a complete DIY nano cube almost same size as your looking for in april this year.
Steel DIY stand: R1800 including special paint & anti rust treatment...
DIY glass cube: R2000 (excluding plumbing)
    DIY glass sump: R1200
    Plumbing & electrical fittings: +-R850

Total for tank only: +-R5850 (& that was all diy +cutting cost where possible.)

So, what im trying to say is... Just keep your eyes on the for sale forums & you might get yourself a nice bargain on a used tank & especially when it comes to hardware, you normally get stuff at half price...

Ps. When i started my current cube tank, i bargained on setting up the entire tank for +-R7000... Im standing on Double that amount... (Which is still a bargain for thw amount of pleasure i get from my tank)

    Hi Visser
    Thanks for the idea
I currently have a boyu tl550 and every bit spent on it is worth it hence I'm ready to upgrade to the intermediate stage of marine keeping:1:
So I'm just trying to get an idea of costs for the tanks and stands and sumps as I'm still new to the whole setup...will purchase hardware slowly whether it be new or old as budget is tight to just throw one whole amount in.so I'm keen on getting the tank, stand, and sump first then start the journey of hardware then the long cycle period then the best past for last.....my LS:yeahdude:

My question is your new setup is not much bigger than a tl550, for all the extra cost what about modding that tank? I bought a hang on skimmer, did a DIY led unit and removed the internal filter plastic and got a lot more space and it really improved the tank. That's my suggestion if you take your current size vs new size

The new set up will be about 250l while the boyu is only 128l,
Im also looking at a modern look to a tank as the boyu doesnt really cut it for me.
