I have read so many opposing thoughts on MH vs T5, this is a very good read though!

I still have alot of questions about MH vs T5:

    1. Which globes have the longest lifespan; some sites say MH has to be replaced every year, others say every 2 years; same with T5... every 6 months, every year, every 2 years?

    2. I have also seen many different opinions about the actual "usable" light output of these lights. I cant remember where I have read it, but one site had a comparison and T5 had a 66% usable output compared to the Watts of the globe, where MH only had something like 40%...

Can these statistics be taken as a general norm, or will the type of globe (for example ATI or Geisemann or Reeftec) determine the outcome?

Yo louis I can say this I. Got a ati power modulle 8x80watt and my corals grows better and more col than metal halide I had a giesseman infinity 2x250 met and 4 t5s and there s no way that metals can beat t5s I only changed my globes after 24months and the saving on electric bill is about 40 percent

Hi gaboon I find t5s is by far the better way to go and the finest corals are grown under t5s,check out ati aquaristik web site

Why is the ATI power module so 'fantastic' compared to other T5 units, is it the make of the tube or the ballast?

Hi viper the powermodule is all about the design of the reflectors cooling of the unit via cooling fans that can be set to 3-4 speeds and how the light bouces from reflector to relector so a light unit like mine that is 8x80watts by 1.500mt, shines a tank of 2.00mt by 1.00 with no prob

    Cool, thanks.

Any opinion on the Reef Inmates units? I have the 8 x 54w T5 unit. Any idea what ballasts are used in these units?

Brilliant unit IMO. I currently have the 10x54W unit. I think if we can get the unit to cool more (using fans) , it will perform way better. Reason I say this, as the bulbs get hotter, they tend to become more dim. Now, I dont know if it is because of the cheap bulbs?

Cool, that has just saved me the additional $$$ for the MH unit, then was the globe, the mounting fixtures and wiring...Nice to find out that I haven't been wrong with my T5 lighting without MH all this time.

Hi guys the reef inmates units are excellent the best to do with there units, if it is not done as yet is to rewire your ballast to digital and mount them externally,by doing this you will have less heat internally and you will find that your bulbs last so much longer and ballast runs cooler and by doing this you save on electrical bills

Shot Imran! What about just installing fans in the unit?

Hey Imraan, very useful read and info. I see a mod on my T5 cumn. So true, additional cooling and preventing heat build up inside the unit is the secret to T5 lighting. Excellent info!

One more thing crew. Is it more important to keep the bulbs cool or the ballast cool?

I think halides will always rock. It comes to personal choice, me using 400w halides with t5.
