So I finally after much research and lots of bending the bank cards have started up my nano. Initially i was going to go for a 80x80x50 tank built by idol but being new to the hobby and not knowing if in 6 months i would want to pack it in so I decide on starting a little smaller. I purchased a Boyu TL550 from a fellow forum member thanks @Zandy! and I couldn't be happier with my choice.

After collecting the tank and doing some research on the Boyu skimmers i decided to upgrade the skimmer to a Tunze 9004 thanks (@Anita from Tunze for the amazing service!) and much to my delight it actually fits in the back compartment of the Boyu facing sideways. but i wanted it facing forwards so i cut away the lip of the 2nd compartment to fit it in anyway. the Skimmer is working really well, there isn't any bio load at the moment but its dead silent and skimming the odd bit of gunk here and there.

While digging through the archives on the forum found that the standard bio balls and ceramic rings are not the best for filtration. I asked the guys on the forum and finally came up with what filtration I want to use. So first compartment Filter wool and filter sponge with some live rock underneath it all. then 2nd compartment skimmer, 3rd compartment Purgien, Phosguard, Matrix and heater. with the return in the last compartment.

The tank was a little dirty when i collected it so not to start my tank with possible left overs that could impact the new tank, I gave it a really good vinegar scrub and ran it for a day with regular tap water. I emptied it out and left it to dry before filling it up with RO water. I added the salt and live sand and had to wait.

After staring at a Tank with nothing in but live sand the Real Reef I ordered from @flappy at urban marine finally arrived! I must apologize for annoying @flappy with being so impatient and asking so often when the rock will arrive. I couldn't be happier! this rock is awesome! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for live rock! it makes your take look beautiful and makes scaping easy!

the tank is finally complete and cycling and now I stare at diatoms. My plan is to upgrade the T5's to LED's but I would like to keep the lid so thinking of either a DIY or asking SeanH if he could make a lid that could fit a prebuilt LED system in.

I must thank all the guys who have helped me with advise and recommendations on the forum!

I am dosing special blend at the moment, following the instructions on the box. I know you mentioned that you cant overdose with special blend, will dosing more help with speeding up the cycle? and Damn that stuff reeks!!!

thanks @dallasg but i am not sure it will be ready by this weekend. the Ammonia is less than 0.1 but the alk is a tad low at the moment 5dkh. my salinity is also at 1.023, i will be adding some more salt tomorrow night. and hopefully that will sort out the alk.

that is great to hear the tank is running and stocked, perhaps get some more CUC, to take care of the cyano issue.Access nutrients equals cyano issues !!

    Hey Guys,

just a quick update, the tank is doing well, i have 2 clowns, a orchid dottyback, a cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp and a electric blue hermit.

on the coral front the pin cushion didnt make it, i am not sure what happened maybe put it in to soon but i have since replaced it with a torch which seems to be doing great. the xenia is really happy and the GSP is growning like grass. my zoas seem good as well. anyway enough babbling here is the pic
