Look at this tank, insane, and I'm not talking about the colourful corals...

Some points I picked up on:

    • I don't use any additives other than iodine, which I dose once a month if I remember. No blue bottles, no vials of bacteria, no secrets or magic potions. I use a Deltec calcium reactor which keeps up with Ca and Alk demand.
    • A deep sand bed, cheato and xenia
    • One thing this reef tank has demonstrated is just how little is needed, it has helped me realise there's a lot of stuff I don't need.
    • There is no live rock, just a few bits of dead reef bones
How crazy simple is this tank yet look at the corals :eek:

This just irritates me, lol :p We spend thousands on live rock, additives, bacteria, vodka, etc. etc. etc. and here this guy comes along, with NO live rock, NO additives, a dsb in a black plastic bucket and all he does is do water changes and he gets colours like that? I give up. :p

Was chatting to a well known SA reefer who is against dosing all kinds of cr@p, he convinced me to stop carbon dosing and going back to basics. I've put in a scrubber and dose iodine and the tank has never looked better. Wish my SPS looked like that though:(

Not even, he's got about 1000 litres and only changes 40 litres once a week.

No way. They are plastic corals, my son has some as toys, he's going to suddenly lose them and my tank will find them, finders keepers.:tt2::p

On a serious note: KISS-Keep it simple stupid.

    GREAT LOOKING TANK.

Well, there is proof that a DSB does work if setup correctly :whistling:

I read the whole article now.. this guy does really keep it simple. He does the minimum.. checks Alkalinity, Magnesuim, Calcuim and Iodine... basically thats it.

No reef computers, no dosing pumps, no probes.. Could the secret be not to fiddle to much.. I for one check everything I can everyday..being over causious.

Well,  for this guy, its impressive.

Its proof that DSB's and constant water changes work ;) by doing a 4% water change a week he is keeping all the major and trace elements in check. Its something I came to realise with my Nano. It wasnt good husbandry but more the water changes that kept the corals and livestock happy :)

I have to admit that the less I mess around in the tank, the better the corals look.
