    Hi guys

Got a whole host of nicely shaped rocks for my new build. I need to make some structures with it and to do it with pratleys will take a lot of time and money. The other option is pvc or plastic rods which is doable i guess.

My question is, is quick drying cement from builders an option? I know it may cause PH issues, and needs to rest in water for a couple of weeks. But should be ok after that?

As far as I know you might also have problems with phosphates leaching when using cement

Should be yes but under water all the time might cause it dissolve and leach
Like I said I could be wrong but that is what I remember reading before and it does make sense that it being constantly submerged that is bound to leach something eventually

A few people seem to use cement to make up frag plugs, I would assume once it is cured and dried and soaked in RO for a while it should be fine? Also read somewhere that SPS frags tend to grow quicker on cement plugs as opposed to plastic plugs, so it can't be all bad?

Very true, ive used lots of self made cement plugs, and any effect it may have had wasnt humanly noticeable

What is the main reason against Pratley Putty (red and white box)?
Having to use too much of it?

fibreglass can be used and the poly-urathane foam, but the hardener has ammonia so after its cured soak in seachem safe for a day and all good

So i found that rock set works quite well, think its a Plascon product.

Very similar to quick set cement, but easier to work with. Just add a bit of water and mix until its a nice thick putty like consistency. Sets in minutes and WAYYYY cheaper than putty, also easier to work with.

Made a few rocky shapes will post picks tomorrow when im happy to pick it up. The one test rock i did last week has set ROCK hard, cant break it, except with a hammer and chisel.

    For the record

    DONT USE ROCK SET.

I made the most cool looking structures, it dried, seemed rock hard, i was happy. Left the rocks in water for a week or so, took it out and half the stuff had dissolved.

Back to putty i guess, sigh

Yeah took me by surprise also, now its a mission to get the left over stuff off.

Im gonna try white cement, which ive used for frag plugs before, that worked well, dunno why i didnt think of it before.

So white cement and course gravel, will post when i have some results.
