Hey guys, I am really new to this and I have taken almost 3 months to decided on a tank and I decided on the above tank.

Really enjoying it but how long does it take the protein skimmer to start building up foam in the collection cup. I am worried that I have not set up the tank properly. Maybe two little water in the tank or two much.

I have added live rock, I have only added about 3.8kg of rock so far, Will be adding more at a later stage, this is just to get the tank to start cycling,

    Welcome to masa chris

One of my mates brought one of those nanos about four months ago and it did take quite a while before it started skimming anything out the water +-3 weeks. He also has about 4 kgs lr. His nano is really starting to look stunning already

Thanks fraser, my tank has not been running for that long a yet as it is only in the begining stages of cycling. So i guess i must just give it time,

Some other questions, during cycling do I need to keep all the lights on or can they stay off? I am currently only keeping the L.E.D on.
what is the best test kits to get to make sure my water is perfect for my fish and coral when I add them.

ya we also were thinking the same thing and wondering if its actualy working...

but i must say for a small skimmer it works well was impressed. When my tank was cycling i just put the lights on for a very short period during the days just so i could inspect and see the progress and also looking for live on the rocks 3 or 4 hours...

I have been using the SALIFERT and TROPIC MARIN test kits for ammonia nitrite and nitrate and they work well but just seen the CA MG test from SALIFERT and they are very acurate.. all u need to test now is 1.ammonia 2.nitrite and 3.nitrate in that order

How long has ur tank been setup

    Post us some pics

Hi Chris and masahello please feel free to call me on 071 203 2879 or send me a email lawrence@aquaria-sa.co.za if you have any questions or if you need some help with your Aquaria AMW102 . With regards to the skimmer , they normally settle in after about 72 house and stop skimming wet and form a dry foam. Just make sure the setting is closed as much as possible on the skimmer pump for now as if its open the wet skim will fill the cup up very fast. Once again if you need help just shout...and send us some pictures of your setup please..

Note that adding more rock later could lead to those rocks also going into a cycle. To get rid of the dead stuff inside them. So it is better to add all your rock now and let it all complete their cycle together. Or have the next batch of rock in another system to cure before adding to your tank.

i have the same tank. works great and after some time of setting up and cycling it is really easy to keep and look after.

i have to say that it took my skimmer about a month to start skimming properly and even to date it still skimms wet sometimes... i dont really mind. set it so it is almost closed by the pump and let it be.

another thing ive done is take out the sponge from the sump and replace it with carbon. my water is always clean now and the sponge use to make the return chamber run dry sometimes as it was quickly becoming congested.

hey guys, so an update on the tank.

Got two hermit crabs, a sea urchin two yellow belly damsel's and a turbo snail, I am still struggling with the green hair algae but its a battle I am not giving up on. if any body can give me other suggestions on how to combat it that will be great. will up load more photo this weekend.

When can I add some coral? how long does the tank need to be running till I can start adding more?

    hi
    got the same tank
the turbo snail will take care of the algae
    just give it time
add only one or two corals then get into the groove and see how your tank reacts after water changes
these small tanks go through major shifts after water changes
