I use filter wool and change it maybe twice or once a week. It gets pretty dirty and helps to keep the sump clean

I just use a 2L ice cream container. Cut a hole in the lid so my inlet pipe goes in then its filter wool, bellow that is a plastic crate (you can use egg crate) this is just to keep the filter wool in and then there is a hole on the bottom of the container. I also hang an organza bag filled with phosguard from the outlet hole as this is a high flow area. This has also reduced noise and saltcreep :)

Does the force of the water not open the ice cream container? Do you punch holes in it for water to exit?

I run 50% of my overflow water through the skimmer and the other half through milk filter socks. These need to be replaced almost weekly and filter out a lot of gunk.

    Just a question....

Is the organic material that gets removed not supposed to reach the DSB, as food or fuel for the bacteria to break down? I would have thought that one should maybe put the floss AFTER the DSB?

I buy those big flat sheets of filter wool, cut a piece as wide as my sump, fold it in half & place it between the two glass dividers which are close together in my sump.

The problem with putting it after your DSB is that you prevent pods & things going back to your DT as a food source,I think!

    My 2cents:

I have 01 sheet of filter material before the DSB and 01 sheet in the 2nd last compartment before water goes to the return pumps.

Reason for the 1st sheet- to trap all unwanted detritus and food before it gets to the DSB- there are more than enough food that gets through the filter in microscopic form- the stuff your critters in your DSB lives on ;)

I run filter wool in my overflow. Made a little shelf in the overflow using eggcrate to hold it up. I change the wool every second day.

Think I might try to fit a container of sorts in the overflow with some floss to see what I can catch...

I take it the "thin" pieces in the sump you guys are talking about are bubble traps...

the filter floss will remove organic material before it has a chance to break down into nitrates/phosphtes/etc. Some will still reach the DSB and there will be plenty of disolved organics to feed the bacteria.

yes on the bottom corner it has a big slot cut into it and that exits into the sumps inlet chamber
