Definitely looks like sponge to me. Great hitchhikers to have!

Ditto Warr - it could have come in as spores in life rock.... did you perhaps add some life rock at any time from another source in the last few weeks?
Yip quite a lot, but this particular rock was not new and the new rocks have nothing on them

Sponges do a GREAT job and all of them are beautiful "in the eye of the beholder" of course:razz:

They are filter feeders and respond well to healthy coral feeding.

I have experience with them where they helped a LOT with water quality!!

That's kewl, I also discovered on like that on my one piece of LR in my Nano last week, wondered what it was! Almost completely black, the rock has been in the tank for about 5 months, very strange. Apparently, sponges can't take any exposure to air, as air bubbles gets trapped in their body that they can't rid themselves off, so try and not take it out of the water.

Had a very bad experience with a sponge in my bigger cube lately, it died, and let off a toxin that killed most of my zoas, and one also died in my brother's nano and also killed most of his livestock including some fish due to the lower water volume I think. It was a local blue sponge.

It was however not an encrusting sponge, and it was quite large, so hopefully this guy does not do that! I am leaving mine in my Nano!

A Beautiful place!
Sponges that "made it" through all the handling, travel and shipments are quite hardy, especially if their spores grew in your tank - good sign :)
They are excellent water filters

What's that spiky stuff at the bottom centre under the rock Warr?

It is a from of plant or macro algae. Have tryed to ID with no luck.

Could be a turtle weed of some sort. Interesting it has been in my tank from the beginning and never grows or gets eaten
