    Hey all

My name is Wynand and im fom Bloemfontein. Will do a proper introductio as soon as I get my tank to start cycling.

After lots of research, i finally decided that the time has come to start a marine tank.
    I bought the Boyu TL550.

So let start with what ive done and then the problems im having.

    Compartment 1:
The big spunge on top with two stockings of dried coral at the bottem. (Will replace the sponge over the weekend)

    Compartment 2:
    Skimmer

    Compartment 3:
    Heater and ceramic noodles

    Compartment 4:
    Pump and uv thingy

Okay so I added the subtrate (10kG's of very fine crushed coral).
And filled the tank with water.
Heres where problem no1 came in. The tank wasnt level enough.
Could this have been the problem? (Did drain it later and will refill today)
    I re-levelled the base.

After the tank was filled (no salt yet). I put everything on except the heater and lights.
The is where the nightmare begins.

As I filled all the compartments before switching on everything, all seemed fine, but then i realised that the last compartment was starting to get lower and lower. I opened the skimmer valve to its max, but stiil the last compartment kept draining.

I also noticed that there is no bubbles in the skimmer. The middle cup is about half, but does sits there. Could it be this is because there is no salt?

So the main problem is that compartments 3 and 4 keeps emptying. Oh and in the skimmer compartment the water level gets so high that it overflows into the next compartment

Thanks for any help in advance

    hi and welcome

skimmer wont work with out salt in the water :)

when you say overflow , out the tank? it supposed to channel through the compartments etc.
check there is nothing blocking the flow, also how full is the tank? should be filled just to where the glass meets the plastic rim

Overflows over the top of the compartment into the next compartment. I did fill it to there in yhe beggining, but because of the overflow I took out some water.

can you fill the tank with water and nothing else (skimmers, sponges etc.) in the chambers and just run the return pump and see if the water flows freely from the DT to the first chamber and so on till it reaches the return chamber.. then start adding sponges etc. one by one until you find out whats blocking your flow

Okay ill try that. Just one question. Isnt the skimmer reaponsible for moving the water from chamber 2 to chamber 3?

no it shouldn't be the water should just overflow from one chamber to another . the skimmer pump should suck water from its chamber and release the water back in the same chamber

The water flows into the first chamber, under the divider into the second chamber , over the divider into the 3rd chamber and under the divider into the 4th chamber. This is all done by the return pump.

Can you post a pic of the skimmer. It doesnt look like its switching on. It wont "skim" anything but it should still make "bubbles". maybe the dead coral you are talking about is blocking the water flow between the first two chambers. I agree with @HOT SAUCE. Remove all the filter media and see if the water runs freely between the chambers.

Please send us some pictures as itll make it easier to identify something.

This one doesnt. It has a nozzle that goes into the next chamber. All the other chamber has a gap under, but the skimmer chamber doesnt. I think i took a pic of it last night. Will post it

Dude I would remove the sponge and replace it with filter floss as the sponge clogs quicker and restricts flow more than filter floss. Maybe think of removing noodles and putting in bio cubes.

It runs fine. Going to put evrything back systematically, but I believe I found the problem.
Problem 1 is that im an idiot and problem 2 was the water level like dalladg mentioned.

I made the mistake of thinking the skimmer is responsible for transferring water from compartment 2 to 3 and that the overflow was bad. I only now realised that the devider there is shorter and that it should overflow.

Guys thanks lot for the help. Its seems to be running great now that the water level is correct.
I just added the salt, so will leave it running for a week or so and then add some live rock.

@EFJ. Definitally getting rid of the sponge. I read on some other thread that the bio balls is worse than the ceramics. I got some with the tank, but took them out.

The next equipment im buying is a powerhead. What size should I be looking at?

Hey Wynie, You are correct stay away from the bio balls but the biocudes @EFJ is a very good product that alot of reefers are using. I haven't put them into my boyu but thats purely cause you need to use them as specified and if you don't things can go wrong.

have a look at this thread Biocudes
