    Hi All,

Caught this little one on my pin cushion a few minutes ago:

    Size comparison to R1 coin:

The dots on the carapace are red, smooth legs with a small pincer (could have lost the second one, can't really say).

Any idea if it is good or bad?

    Thanks in advance.

    Looks like Carpilius maculatus
Also sometimes called the spotted rock crab

This was about the only info I could get on them - if indeed it is the same crab...
711 Crab Profile - A Profile of the 711 Crab

According to this site, it is not reef safe when it is fully grown, but I may stand corrected...
Let's see if someone else can confirm / deny...

The pointy nose on @tekkengal's pic makes me doubt a little. Any chance of a clear pic ?

But there is not a lot of white crabs with red spots...

Thank you for all the info! :)
Sad that it is not reef safe because it does look quite pretty.

Don't worry, I do the relocation program and it is currently in my pico tank. I'm too soft to deliberatly go and kill it

Woah, hang on there. That ID is completely wrong. Your crab is almost certainly a commensal, definitely NOT the one linked above. It's sure as hell not going to be killing anything with those tiny claws. Looks like a Trapezia or related genus. They're completely fine with corals...in some cases actually beneficial.

Can you please post a link of the info? I could not find anything on similar patterns? Maybe I was looking in all the wrong places then?

I suspect that it's Caphyra unidentata. Colour is hardly ever a reliable way to ID something. The tiny claws, body shape and thin legs are typical of commensals.
