    Hi guys

Not sure if I even qualify as a newbie. I have always kept freshwater fish before, and decided to set up a tank again.

Went this afternoon to a pet store to see about getting some fresh water fish, and ended up looking at a starter marine tank for R2500.

The freshwater fish did not look so appealing anymore and I have decided that I am ready to join the big boys and go marine ( well I will be at month end when I plan to go back for the tank)

For now I am here to learn as much as I can to make it a success.

Any advise and info /comments/help wil be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Shiraz

Not sure. Long term. Would like to have an anamone , clown fish or 2 and not sure what they called but a prawn and a dory . Hopefully a starfish as well if the tank can accommodate

Ok. Went around looking at more shops for a tank.

After a bit of confusion I am seriously considering a Boyu TL550 that was offered to me for R3000.

What do you guys think of this tank and is a good deal R500 extra for the stand

    Any advice?

Not a bad starter Tank..not sure on the price as I'm not on the current market value, but some of the new Members have bought them and are loving it...just remember that with all "Hooded" Tanks, you will have a bit of a heat issue...so converting to LED's is something you should look into...or else you will be looking into Chillers etc...many DIY LED's on MASA regarding the TL 550...hopefully the TL550 clan will be able to give you more advise and the do's and don'ts of the TL550...I've only got the TL450... @mandarinman @Charl_Stanhope @Kalvyn @Mc @Len
    ...just to mention a few...:p

    Welcome to MASA!

If I remember correctly, I have seen a new TL550 going for about R3900 / R4000 with stand in PE.

    Welcome to MASA!!

I'm not sure about the stand, as I never got one - but I think for the price you pay these are really great starter tanks, and I think that R3,000 sounds reasonable.

    Is the tank new?

Welcome to MASA. I love the tank. There are a couple of guys that had mod there tl550'with LED. Looks great. I'll get there somewhere this year. Is the stand included in the R3000? I have got mine for R2500 at Aquatic Vision in Brackenfell. They are running a special at the moment. They are one off the sponsers aswell.

Can't give you more info as I will set up my tank at the 1 of june. Because I am moving to a new house. Looks like we will be starting up ower systems at the same time.

That is still a good price.
R2500 is a give away for this tank.

Welcome To MASA. you will learn a lot about marines here and get some really good hellp. Dont be scared to ask.

Regarding the Tl550. They are good starter tanks, ive gotten alot of pleasure from mine and I am happy. But I must admit, alot of those pleasures only came after the upgrades Ive done to mine. (you will have to upgrade the lights if you want to keep a nenny,or thats one of the things that you will need to do) You can have some soft corals and easy to keep lps corals under the standard tl550 lights,no problem. You will only be able to keep an anemone after a few months, when youve got stable parameters and a little more experience.A "dory" is called a regal tang and unfortunately you need a bigger tank for a tang. They need loads of swimming space. But you get amazing small fish @Len has got some awesome small fish in his tl550. So do a bit of research before you add corals(maybe ones that would not take over the tl550, as you dont have that much space) and add some special fish, maybe some you dont see everyday or small ones where you can add an xtra fish or two. There really are alot of things you can do with this tank but I think the secret with these tanks is patiece and alot of research before you buy something. but you will enjoy this hobby!!

@ShirazA dont rush and buy a tank. Have a look at the for sale section 1st. You can pick up a little 4ft or something for a bargain, get a little TS2 or something and you are cool. The plu and play systems are cool but they are very limited and small, you will quickly outgrow them.

Have a look at the aquaria tank before you buy a Tl550 as it has T5 lighting. Rather go for the 120L one
