How do you work out how many fish can be kept in a tank? Including considering them growing. Is there a way to work it out? Maybe fish size per square inch or something??

I have read on other forums its 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons of water ie. 5 inch fish would need at least a 25 gallon tank, but a lot of people say that is old and outdated way of measuring how many fish you can have. Whether or not this is right I have no idea, still very new to the hobbie

Depending on species, their behaviour, size, territory, growth rate, eating habits....

So many. I doubt if there could even be a set rule. We are human, we govern our lives by rules, they are fish.

I really don't want to overstock a tank. Then how do you know enough is enough?

When you think you have enough fish then take one out.

well one of the ways i test from a biological view is, after adding a new fish and feeding them, if there is any NH4 after 2 hours then you have reached the bioload of your filtration.

as long as the 5 rules of freedom are applied then that should be a good enough guideline

    1. Freedom from hunger
    2. Freedom from discomfort
    3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease
    4. Freedom from fear and distress
    5. Freedom to express normal behaviour

Makes sense. Haha Alberto, I was thinking of that actually!
But on a serious note, biologically testing it could work. But doesn't mean that the fish will be happy? I guess signs of stress also have to be watched. Good indicator.
