Greetings from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania!

I was in this hobby for a while in SA, but could never get it off the ground like I wanted due to the costs involved. I moved to Tz about 19 months ago and this was a dream come true for me cause now I have the whole Indian Ocean as my backyard tank :whistling:

Started diving and obviously snorkeled at every chance I got, but soon realized what damage are being done to the coral reefs around here. Local fishermen has discovered the potential of how many fish they can catch in a short period, with the least amount of effort by practicing illegal dynamiting :cursing:

The Coral reefs are being blown to :censored: here, every month I go back to the reefs I can see how things are taking a turn for the worst and its becoming pretty serious now!

Over the first year seeing corals blown apart and little pieces lying unattached on the ocean floor (some from storms as well), I thought I ought to get a tank up here and try and save some of those little follows! There is absolutely no support for the marine hobby here so I had to buy the tank and equipment in SA and brought it up with us on a Helicopter fairy we did in January. hahaha the customs police on both Mozambique and Tanzanian borders never believed me when I said "Fish Tank", but quickly learned if I said "Printer" they just went "Yes Yes Yes" and nodded their heads :whistling:

And so the Nano started bit by bit, all of the rocks and coral where taken from blown off coral and coral-rock! Only captured live specimens are the critters that came with the rocks and a little Banded Damsel......

The tank is still in infancy stage and there is a lot I still want to do with it, but think its coming nicely together now and soon I'll have to start taking some corals back to the reef and attach them in the wild, they're growing like mad!! The only reason for them I can think off doing so well (and the best advice I can give anyone) is, water changes, water changes, water changes!!!! I never learned this lesson in SA, but have really seen now the absolute necessity of it!!!!! I'm lucky in this way now, cause now its free :whistling:

I will attach some pics below....

Due to being only 6° from the equator, it can get pretty damn hot up here all year around! Chillers is a drink that you can order here on an island and that's how far you'll get!! But I had to make a short term plan to cool the tanks water down to ambient temp! The good thing about the temp here though is that it stays constant throughout the day and night, averaging from 33° in shade in daytime to 29°-30° at night in the summer and now in winter 29° in the shade and at night around 26°-27°. So I figured keeping the water the same as ambient temp the tankmates would be more than happy and so my short term plan became my permanent solution and installed 3 computer fans in the Nano Tanks Lid.....

    Very nice tank.
I like the way you did that fan very neat. What did you use to cut the hole?
You should look around and sea if there are any online sites that will ship to you, specially for consumables. I know there are quite a few that ship to South Africa.
How are the collection laws in your country?

Would you believe I did it with my leatherman?? I have no skills whatsoever when it comes to DIY, but due to no second chances with the lid, I had no choice but to take it slow and make the best of it!!

I've tried to look for some shipping companies or some way of getting hardware and consumables here, but for the price its ridiculous!!! I just have to do with seeing SA once a year and in an emergency try and bargain with flying back and forth once in a while.

They are quite strict on collecting here!! Very strict actually!! As long as you don't collect for reward or making business out of it and obviously no collection out of the marine parks its ok! Which is soooooooo ironic, cause they are fishing the hell out of the marine parks, braking all the coral with their nets they are pulling in from land and the illegal dynamiting right inside the marine park!!!!!
