Also what type of riding are you planning on doing?
This will determine if you want a 26er or 29er

What are they charging you for the Scotts?
I have a Merida Big 9 500, enjoy that bike, even though its my "cheaper" bike

Well personally I dont think its a good idea because the Big 9 500 is not a woman specific 29er, so even if you get a small sized frame it is not designed for woman.
You do get a few brands which make woman specific 29ers, so if you set on a 29er for her I would rather look at one of those.
Another thing is if she is starting out a 29er might not be the best option, I ride a lot and with a few woman as well (most of whom will out ride most men I know) and none of them like riding 29ers.
29ers are a tad harder to ride then 26ers, due to the bigger wheel size and generally heavier frame, you need a lot more power in your legs to ride a 29er (especially on steep climbs) so no disrespect but natuarally woman are less powerful in their legs then men are and therefore they generally prefer 26ers
However it does come down to personal preference, although my suggestion would be to look at a 26er for her (also in that price range you will get a better quality 26er than 29er anyway) and as she gets more into it and fitter, etc. then maybe look at upgrading to a better bike, possibly a 29er.
