    Hi Everyone.
I've had my tank since November last year. JC from Perky Pets helped me start it up and we used water from their shop to get started.

All has been OK for now, but lately the algae is just taking over and I cannot seem to get it under control.

    It's a 250L tank
    parameters as follow this morning:

    Saline 0,023
    ammonia 0,3mg/l
    Nitrate 3ppm
    Phosphate 0,45ppm
    Alkalinity 2,5 meg/l 7,6dkh
    Calcium 400ppm
    Magnesium 1200
    PH 8,0
    Nitrite 0,000

I'm using a canister Filter with charcoal and phosphagaurd in. I've got a protein skimmer and 3 powerheads with ample "current" in the tank

I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I also have glass over the top to prevent fish from jumping out.

I've been doing 25% water changes every 3 weeks

    Please help !!

    can you upload a pic?

what is the water you are adding looking like? where do you collect? and what are its values?

your ammonia is not good! and phos is pretty bad.. ph is also a little on the low side.. what test kits were used?

How often do you clean the canister filter? That can be causing high nitrates swell although you wouldn't be picking up the readings due to your algae growth.

    Lighting:
    What kind
    How old are the bulbs
    What is your photperiod

There are a lot of contributing factors to algae. The more info the better to help.

Ask Oasis to test their RO tds but you want to see the reading.. It should be 0 but 5 is ok...

There could lie your problem. Don't they (Oasis) sell drinking RO water? If so that water is remineralized and the minerals will be adding PO4 to your tank.

If its just the glass and rock you are talking about then it isn't so bad. Get yourself a couple turbo snails which will help in cleaning your glass. Film algae on glass is quite normal and a lot of people experience it.

Tangs also love algae and will make a meal of it in a few minutes :p

But that's not a long term solution. When last did you change your phosguard? In my opinion your phosphates are high, if you want hair algae gone, reduce your phosphates and change out your phosguard every time you see signs of hair algae growth.

Cleaning the glass and syphoning away detritus before doing water changes can also help. How much and how often do you feed the tank?

Then again some might say that a healthy tank will show signs of these long haired algae species :whistling:

I stand to be corrected on this though ;)

From the photos provided this is about a weeks growth. Simply scrape off but try and catch as much of it as possible into a fish net with very small holes. This will take this out of your system instead of it floating to the bottom and rotting. Or simply growing from where it lands

Just something on top of all the great advice already given, you said you have glass covers on top of your tank? Are they completely covering the whole surface area? As surface to air oxygenation needs to happen and will be prevented if the tank's water surface is completely covered and it can not "breath".
