Hi guys, i have been continueing to battle with algae problems on my 1000L, Running in the sump I have an ATI powercone 200i, DSB with chaeto, then running phosguard and a 5500L/H return. After a friend looked after the tank and used tapwater, think mats of algae have consumed the substrate, how can I get rid of this algae without loosing my aragonite? Is my sump missing something? Keeping SPS and the colours are lovely and all tests are showing 0 nitrates+phosphates but i think the tests are just shit, so any suggestions welcome. Am also dosing reef biofuel by brightwell which is the same as carbon dosing

Firstly get some new kits if you think the present ones are not working, at least you'll be able to get a "picture" of the problem, on the other hand the kits might be working but because of the algae, they are giving you some false readings.

    How old is the tank?

Your phosgaurd might be depleted and might need recharging, how long have you been using this?

Type of food you are feeding and how often? I saw in a previous thread that you have a lion fish, these guys really pollute the water, what other fish do you have?

Are you skimming wet or dry?

I don't think you need to lose the arrogonite, from the pics, the hair algae does not seem excessive, have you tried some biological control, like trochus snails, tangs, fox faces, even a sea hare (if you can get one)?

Also, in the mean time, scoop/siphon it out gently, this might seem tedious, but until you've tried various options this will at least tidy up the tank.

Don't get rid of your aragonite, it might make the situation worse by releasing trapped hydrogen sulphide from the lower depths and poisoning your system, it is also a place where many organisms live that are very beneficial to your system.

My, bad, I see you have a powder blue! Again, looking at your pics, algae really not a bad eye sore, just some minor husbandry changes might help.
    Might be a feeding issue.

Ive seen WAY worse than that. What other fish do you have?

I have seen yellow tangs and convict tangs destroy hair algae.

Ive got the powderblue and a lawnmower blenny, the lawnmower doesnt really chow the algae in the sand, the powderblue does a bit but there is so much algae in a lump that has consumed the aragonite.
The phosguard is actually new, got it last week.

Thanks for the advice guys, appreciate it:thumbup:

Syphon it out, rinse it and put it back. Algae arrives quickly but takes a while to go away. Reduce your light period, reduce feeding, up the water changes. Just generally better maintenance till u get rid of it.

You just need a little patience, scoop out what you can and see how that goes. Have a beer, it will make the time pass by quicker too.:peroni::biggrin:

Thank you for the replies again, the algae problem has increased exponentially, i even have the orca biocubes and the phosguard is in a reactor @SantaMonicaHelp I have made a very small UAS and will post some pics, I have nearly every type of filtration one can think of in the sump so.....

    1) My topup RO is not as clean as i would have though, gonna change filters today

    2) The ATI powercone, it jus is not pulling out enough skimmate at alll!!!! This is a majour concern, 2 days and no skimmate, it just sits at a certain level and dopesnt produce that layer of skimmate, Gonna get another skimmer today(aquamedic sl1000) to run alongside the powercone to compare.

    3) is my return pump from the sump enough???

    4)open to suggestion...............PLEASE

My skimmers has bubbles like that only if I feed with flakes or add any fish oil supplements, have you washed your skimmers lately, and if so, how?
