I took some photos of my well loved Aiptasia in my reef tank today, and wanted to post them on here.

Aiptasia tentacle with zooxanthellae (the brown round cells) and nematocysts (the white cylindrical shapes with barbed tentacles).

A single nematocyst that has been triggered due to stress
    [IMG]

A couple of nematocysts that have been expelled from the body of the tentacle. One has not yet been triggered (the central closed one). The others have been triggered. There is also a single zooxanthellae cell.

Another view of the tentacle, showing zooxanthellae and nematocysts in the cell walls.

This is what a nematocyst does. Its body ejects the barbs into the target, delivering its venom into the tissue. Since the tentacle is barbed, it cannot easily be withdrawn.

Spectacular pictures Waldo, well done. How does your camera mount onto the microscope?

Looks about right, just without the fluorescent attachment but with DIC optics.
