Hi there, I am quite new to the whole marine aquarium keeping and saw something interesting in regards to Aiptasia and controlling it. When I first saw it growing in my tank I thought "Cool" first little coral thing... to my surprise I found out this is Aiptasia and if not controlled it will spread quite rapidly so I did some reading on how to kill it and so on, but I thought I will let it be seeing I did not have much else in my tank except some fish and live rock.

A while back I bought a starfish, I think it is a chocolate chip one or that is what I have seen when searching for an id...well within 5 days of adding him to the tank he had sorted out my problem  , as far as I can see they also like to eat coral but currently he has not yet decided to munch on any of my other coral.

Just thought I would share this seeing I couldn't really find anything on here speaking of starfish doing this.

    Cheers

Likely just a matter of time before it moves onto your soft corals.

Yeah, if the starfish is anything like a crown-of-thorns, I foresee some depression in your future...

Ok so I have just lucky for now? Well I will then have to watch it closely to see if it starts to feed on my corals, well does it take a while for them to do it or do they start quite soon from when you add them?
I added him almost 2 months ago now.

I unfortunately only have him in the background on one photo and it is a bit blurry but I will get a clearer one tonight.

Yep, very much a coral muncher. As a rule of thumb, stay away from starfish with knob/spines.

Yip belindamotion, that is what he looks like.

I think it might have happened on the day I posted this message lol, I got home on Monday and the one head of my goniopora is a bit retracted and some of the polyps kinda looks damaged but I cant say for certain, will check tonight and if it is still retracted then I suppose I have my answer... hopefully it was just angry at my boxer shrimp seeing that he likes to climb over everything lol

Just a quick update on my goniopora, they seem fine again, so looks like something just irritated them a bit, so it looks like the stars traveling plans are on hold for now....:p

Now if he only starts liking green hair algae I would be very happy!!
