    Hallo every one.

Well I am posing this question, because once again the relativity of this came up.

    I am running 2 x 250W MH.

    Running cost:
    9 Hours x 250W x 30 days = 486 units of @ 96c/unit = R466.56 / Month
    Ballast = R1100
    250W 15 000K XM lighting double ended bulb = R1 045 / Bulb x 2 = R 2 090
The point that I am trying to make is that this is costing a small fortune to run and maintain a MH unit.

All of this is worst case scenario (which I am going through).

Can somebody come in and give me a running cost breakdown of a LED & T5 system that they are running.
There surely has to be something cheaper that goes a longer way...

    Hi! Small calculation error there!

    0,5kW x 9 Hours = 4.5 Units/Day
    4.5 x 30 = 135 units/ Mounth
    135 x 96 cents = R129.60/Mounth

LOL..... I almost had a Heart atack when I saw that running costs! I am going to Run 12 80W T5's = 960W

Gone are the days when LEDs were justified for power savings.
Radion Gen1 and 3 uses 135w per unit. The Pro is 165 if not mistaken.
All the newer versions are getting more powerful, more LEDS packed into smaller space. Soon we will have 10W LEDs freely available.

For overlap light, to reduce the spotlight effect under LEDS you still need multiple units relatively spaced closer together. I got 4 Radions over a 1.5m tank 750 deep.
    so 135W * 4 = 540 W

Same as what 10 T5 54W tubes would be on running costs. OK, on tank width I would most likely fit 8 tubes, so The T5 running costs would have been less.

Only saving I have is the twice a year replacement of globes. And starting at at least R200 for descend globes, replacing 10 globes twice a year is another painful exercise.

Remember that if your MH use magnetic ballasts, your consumption will be higher. My old 250W aqua-medic MH used 500W per light. So my 2 X 250W halides draw 1000W. I used a electricity monitor to get that usage. My T5 lights on electronic ballast used what the tubes were rated at. 2 X 54W T5s used 108W according to the electricity monitor.

You are also lucky on your tariffs. My current tariff is R1.39 per KW and I am also in JHB.

    Sorry, Fogot that 1 unit = 1kwh = 3.6m joule.

Where did you get hold of your electricity monitor?

Correct. Builders sell them for R350 I think. Really nice little things.
