I recently discovered the gobsmacking effectiveness of razor blades for cleaning glass. No idea why I never bothered in the past. Anyhow, using the "blade on a stick" approach is a pain in the butt, so I need a blade mounted on a magnet. Anyone know where I can get one at a sane price. I seem to remember some chatter about a mega-mag, but they cost around R800, which is just daft.

Alternatively, anyone with any DIY experience in this area?

Call me Jewish/Irish/Whatever, but I find it morally reprehensible to pay R800 for a R5 blade mounted on a R50 magnet.

I just bought a glass scraper with a stanley blade attached for seven bucks from a hardware. My back glass looks like I filled the tank yesterday

    .

Yeah, that's precisely what I've been using. Works like a charm except that my tank is 2000 x 800 x 600, and getting into all the corners is a right pain.

I attached mine to a rod to get to the corners, back and bottom of the tank. I have just found the blades get blunt quickly and need to be replaced often so they don't scratch the glass

the magnet scraper is the way to go but the one with the blade you have to remove after you have cleaned the glass the blades will rust very quickly, I'm using the normal magnet cleaner but you must used it twice a week to remove the green alga before they get to hard to scrape off.

Just use a stanley blade and the scraper, you can then attach a 20mm water pipe to it to extend the handle. I bought the magnet with scraper attachment, but then nobody had stock of replacement blades, tried for months to get but no stock. You will also need to take the price of the blades into consideration.
