    Hi Guys

I need som advice on my new Lighting system... in a nutshell i was told go forth and aquire your new lights... so this is what i have in mind, please let me know the pros and cons,

8x80W T5 - Lamp replacment every yr works out to R1500+-
2x250W MH with 4x54W T5 for actinics - not sure the price to replace

im note sure which to get.... im leaning on the T5's coz i am using them and im getting great results but if i change to MH will my results be better or worse ? im planning on keeping a Full SPS only Tank

oh and where can i get the above lights ? im looking for something decent and reliable

    Thanks
    Junz

    Power usage for T5 option 8*80 = 640

    Other option 2*250 MH + 4 *54 T5 = 716.

Check out some of the sponsers, ask for globe replacement cost. And also compare the complete pendant prices. Like Dorry Pets or Reef Inmates or Pet Stop. They are the closest to you (as far as I know).

The new styled T5's are brilliant. It sounds like you tank is about 1600mm across which I would suggest the T5 only system. THe halides although bright may be spread too thin to really be beneficial for and SPS only tank.

Any brand of bulbs you're looking at? Try Geisemman or ATIs

Incidently a replacement 250 halide is between 500-1000 bucks for a decent bulb.

I run 6*T5's, 54w tubes scattered / stepped in my 2m hood, and they work fantastically. If the tank is deeper than 700mm (from bottom to water level) I would then and only then use MH

    the tank is 1500 long

because of the price of these high quality lights i will be buying reefteks, which i think are really great

MH could mean that you may need a chiller in summer.... not sure if you considered that?

Quite a few sps aquariums are run on t5's only. Depending on which bulbs you use t5s could work out more expensive in the long run.

Not sure if you like glitter lines, which i do :), but you unfortunitely only get that with MH's.... however thats an aesthetic thing.

Some reasonably well priced quality 250W MH bulbs are BLV's. Last time i checked i think they cost +/-R650 at Lamp House in CT but that was a while ago??

Tank depth, like mentioned above, is a consideration.

The fitting is too short. You need the lights to run as close to the full length of th tank as possible

8*80w T5's may be overkill and the heat generated will be huge.

IMO I would leave the MH and only go the T5 route - they work very well.
