I'm looking to buy my first DSLR and unfortunately don't have the money to buy new.

I've found a second hand Canon 450D for R2800.00. It is just the body, charger and cables. They don't know how many shutter actuations etc. Apparently it is in good condition.

Is it a good buy? Should I go for it or wait and keep looking?

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Hi Brendan

That is a good buy, but subject to you checking all the functions. Ive had two of these cameras and just recently sold it to upgrade. They are big bang for the buck even at normal price. There is a way you can check actuations, but chances are if it was used professionally, the actuations will be high.

I would personally spend as minimum on the camera body if its your entry into photography, but invest in better lenses. Dont be fooled by the clever marketing like they do with cell phones, unless you are going to blow up the image wall size, anything upwards of 350D will work fine, depending of course on the lens you use

Most professionals have been using a 350D as their backup camera and are now happily using the 450D as their backup or the 500D if they need to do video.

PM me to get my contact number if you need to chat about this - I may have some lenses for you that will work well with that body im also clearing out.

    Choices, Choices - Good Luck

I wouldn't spend that much for a secondhand 450d without lens. As you've mentioned Makro sells them new (in a kit) for a fraction more.

Other than that, I was recently at a photography shop, Outdoor Photo, and they had sold a 40D secondhand for something like 2000. I bought a secondhand 17-55 lens for R150. You should watch out for overpaying for 2nd hand cameras....
