hi guys we are setting up a 2.4m x60x60 tank ,we are not using halides as running cost is madness.what would you say is the better option,

option1:2 banks of 1.2m lights of 6 t5 tubes ,diy with reflectors

option 2:2 banks of 1.2m t5 units with four tubes and moonlights(R700 more expensive than option one)

    what would you use ?:yeahdude:

Option 2 will always "look better" from the outside, Loris, but with ONLY 4 tubes each, will limit your choice of what you can keep......

Personally, I would go for option 1. Much more lighting (4 more tubes in total!)

Everyone always says the running cost of MH is crazy but it really isn't. Firstly the 1.2m T5's will mean you will only have three spanning the width of your tank if you choose to only use 6. I don't think it will be enough. Secondly 6 1.2m T5's equates to 324W of lighting in total. Now you will need to replace the tubes every year where with metal halides it is only every 2 years. I would rather go with 2 X 250W MH or 3 X 150W MH. This all depends on what you ultimately want to keep...

R500 that is mad. You sure there wasn't something wrong with the ballast. That is a lot of money? I've got 4 MH hope they aren't using that much money.

yeah a 250w costs me R50 on electricity a month....

I still think t5's are better than MH as far as par values and colour goes.

    12x54w T5's are 648watts
    3x250w MH are 750 watts

T5's will be moe expensive to setup...and run dude to more bulb replacements.. Electricity diffs will not be much at all maybe 50c a day

i dont know, i would go for opt. 2, just because it will look nicer, especially if it is an open top tank, if the lights are going to be hidden away in a cabinet go for opt. 1
